PhD student at UChicago Psych & Incoming postdoc at NYU. Interested in interactions between working and long term memory within and across individuals.

Recruiting a new PhD student to start Fall 2027. Research would focus on Visual Working Memory, possibly with a developmental approach (but not necessarily). Check out my lab website where the are links to the application and contact info if you have questions. rickermemorylab.com

📢 New preprint with @edvogel.bsky.social & @monicarosenb.bsky.social When we encode a long list of items into memory, do we simply repeat the encoding process we use for short lists, or does the brain adaptively reconfigure its neural architecture to accommodate the encoding of a long list?

As of today, I'm officially an Assistant Professor at the University of California Davis! I'm so excited to be joining the Department of Psychology and the Center for Mind and Brain, and I'm looking forward to getting settled into the new lab and embarking on a lot of fun new research this year

A short blonde woman stands next to a concrete sign that says UC Davis. The background of the photos shows a view of a lawn, tree, and building on the UC Davis campus.

Some positive news amongst the chaos: I received an official award notice from NSF (SBE/BCS) this AM! So for those of you with pending applications, keep the faith. Also, looks like I'll be recruiting 1-2 new Ph.D students this fall to carry out the work; interested parties can e-mail me to chat!

New paper: across 3 EEG experiments, we examined how do we edit WM at test. Imagine you were asked to memorize 4 colored squares during encoding: at test, when you were given a single test probe, are you able to remove the items at irrelevant positions (upper), or do you have to keep'em (lower)? 1/n

In collaboration with @monicarosenb.bsky.social , we showed that individual diffs in LTM encoding is uniquely predicted by inter-electrode correlations even controlling for working memory abilities. This suggests that WM & LTM encoding are separate abilities coded by different neural signatures! 1/n

New paper out at Journal of Memory and Language! We knew that individual differences in working memory predict source memory, but did it predict simple item recognition memory (that relied on less attention resources than source memory)? Our answer is: YES! (with @edvogel.bsky.social ) 1/5
