The Regional Seismic Network for Washington and Oregon. We operate almost 700 seismic stations and are the authoritative source for information about earthquakes in both states.

PNSN’s stations monitor seismic activity in our region, but they also capture signals from earthquakes all around the world. Seismic waves from today’s M6.8 earthquake in Kumamoto, Japan traveled over 5000 miles to our network in WA and OR, arriving just over ten minutes later.

⚒️ 🧪 A M6.8 earthquake struck Kyushu, Japan today. Large quakes in Japan are common and often pass without much notice, but this one is serious - instead of occurring offshore in the subduction zone, it is a shallow, strike-slip event near Kumamoto. Damage and deaths have already been reported.
