In my dept there is a sociologist who has spent her career showing that divorce is bad & marriage is good; & another who conducted studies showing that more cops reduces crime, etc. the work is sound & I ain’t complainIng. But this whining about lack of ‘normie beliefs’ is total made up BS

So in my sociology of family class in the violence and abuse topic, I bring up that about 1 in 3 Canadian children has experienced either physical or sexual abuse, or has been exposed to abuse. "Normie beliefs" need to exist alongside uncomfortable truths.

I’d add not just bad faith actors who spurn the field, but grifters who willfully misrepresent the field (or they don’t read) to get attention; or for spite bc they feel entitled to all the wine and they aren’t getting it bc they do unrigorous research. 1/5

- We should, in general, have an incredibly high bar for taking political stances in professional organizations, bc the benefit is almost never worth the many different kinds of costs - Israel is perpetuating genocide in Gaza & genocide is one of the things that institutions should take stances on
