DISTRICT 9 aside, this guy is a world-class disappointment in every way.

We only have 2 “real” IMAX screens in town & all ‘THE ODYSSEY’ showings are sold out well into next week (& even then, only the 1st few rows are open). Didn’t see it in 70mm, but it still felt big & bold & epic, full of beautiful shots, rad moments, & stunning sequences that haven’t left my brain.

100%. LION KING is Hamlet. STAR WARS is Flash Gordon by way of Kurosawa. WILD BUNCH (along w/ a number of Westerns) are also riffs on his films. Most fantasy movies lift, intentionally or not, from Tolkien. Every zombie flick is, in some way, derivative of Romero. "Execution is everything" indeed.

Originality is no measure of quality. Something can be as derivative and as formulaic as hell and still be absolute fire, as long as its well executed. Shakespeare stole King Lear and made it a masterpiece. Raiders of the Lost Ark is intentionally derivitive. Execution is everything.
