Care Instructions I see you forgot the fabric softener again. I only mention it because I’ve just towelled myself dry with sandpaper, and my jumper is scraping at my arms. I only mention it because my skin is chafing against these tree‑bark jeans, and the barnacle vest I’m wearing is pressing glass shards into my back. I see you forgot the fabric softener again. I only mention it because I’ve said it before, how the drawer needs to be filled to the second line so I don’t itch, so I can stand to be clothed. I only mention it because it seems like such a small thing, an easy way to show me you hear me, that you care. Or that you don’t.

Moving through side streets and alleyways cast in neon-lit shadows, I try to avoid the confusion of wrong turns – twisting to the left, dashing to the right, or worse, taking boomeranging U-turns back again to the beginning of after-hours darkness whose thinly webbed net of despair dangles just overhead.
