We're totally gonna beat the Dodgers in the World Series now! (Probably not, but the Guardians actually did some shit at the trading deadline this year!!)
I dropped the ball and didn't share a new poem of mine that's now up on @somewordslit.bsky.social! Here's the link to my poetry thread, which is now at two! "Dog Days" appeared yesterday, and it's sadly a bit too on the nose for what this summer's been like. somewords.boards.net/thread/16/ke...

Three teenage boys printed directions for a hike on a trail in British Columbia, Canada that Google Maps estimated to be over five hours. In reality, their hike weeks ago lasted at least 12 hours and required the intervention of rescue crews, according to the Lions Bay Search and Rescue team.

There is a certain level of obtuseness in (some) "AI" apologists when they flounce up to point out what "AI" is good for in science, etc, while eliding the fact that almost none of that use is driving the current market capitalization, environmental degradation and resource hogging of the field

Oh hey -- it's almost August! That means the #sealeychallenge is right around the corner. My book, It's Easy to Lose Your Breath" is the perfect size for one of your days. Get it now (& so many other great titles) on the @matchfactoryeds.bsky.social website. matchfactoryeditions.com/books/Its-Ea...
I used to do some work on the ethical use of satellite and drone imagery for aid and disaster response, and it is genuinely hard to express in words what a dangerous, stupid thing Google is doing by making it easy to use GenAI to create faked satellite imagery:
How to plant a nuclear plant in Iran
The question is: what on earth is Google doing?

Thank you, First Energy. I also have a hunch that it’s not just due to my increased AC usage. I dunno… could it be those pesky data centers?!

I wrote this poem right after smoke from the wildfires in Canada blanketed parts of Ohio in 2023. Today, the AQI is even worse and will get worse later today. You can read it (and listen to me reading it) at the link to @voicemailpoems.bsky.social below: voicemailpoems.org/2023/08/04/s...
