What the Flock? Oakland City Council Keeps Approving Surveillance Tech

Did you know that Oakland currently has several hundred automated license plate readers (ALPRs) spread across the city...and they have captured over 600,000,000 license plates in the last year alone? Provided by a company called Flock, these readers send data to Oakland's police department — with the alleged purpose of helping to fight crime. Unfortunately, the data can instead be used to threaten the safety of citizens who have committed no crimes — especially our immigrant neighbors.

You probably were not thinking about the various ways that things could go sideways, ranging from inattentive motorists to disruptive counterprotestors. IEB and other like-minded organizations have had a significant presence at countless political and social events over the years, more so during the Trump era.

While confusion abounds in the California gubernatorial race, Indivisible East Bay’s Canvass Crew couldn’t be more clear about their support for congressional candidate for California’s 22nd district, Randy Villegas. “He’s an educator, a small business owner, and his positions are right in line with what I believe in,” says Laurel teVelde. Laurel is one of three Co-Captains of IEB’s Canvass Crew, and in early April she organized a team of eight IEB members to canvass for Villegas in Fresno.

SCOTUS’ dismantling of the Voting Rights Act: What it means for California

The Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana vs. Callais effectively eviscerates the Voting Rights Act and opens the floodgates to new waves of Republican gerrymandering ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. While the potential impact in California is less dire than in other states, we must remain vigilant and support organizations dedicated to protecting voter rights.
