Congresswoman Lateefah Simon

Proudly Representing California's 12th Congressional District.

As a member of the House Small Business Committee and a transit and disability justice advocate, I’m committed to ensuring cities in our district are safe & accessible. That’s why I am proud to secure $850k in federal Community Project Funding for the City of Alameda to upgrade a 3 mile stretch.

"Affordable and reliable transit is not a policy preference. It is what makes full participation in society possible," write @replsimon.bsky.social and Guillermo Mayer. "The freedom to move with dignity is a cornerstone of civil rights. We must protect the tools that defend it."

Public transit is a lifeline for countless Americans. Trump is derailing our protections | Lateefah Simon and Guillermo Mayer

The US will no longer hold transportation agencies accountable for unintentional discrimination. That’s devastating for those of us who depend on it

San Leandro, thank you to the community members who came out to my town hall this week and shared your concerns. Your voices ground my work in Washington, and I am carrying your stories with me as I continue to fight attacks on our civil and human rights.

Our district has a deep history of disability activism and is the birthplace of the modern disability rights movement. I was honored to welcome Dr. Pineda from the Berkeley Center for Independent Living to Washington during Disability Pride Month.

On June 4th, President Trump announced $75 million in federal funding for a coal export terminal in West Oakland. I immediately filed an amendment to the FY 2027 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill to prohibit funding for the project, but House Republicans blocked the amendment.

This week I voted HELL NO on the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act. Our national security depends on more than military strength. It depends on whether families can afford housing, access healthcare, send their children to good schools, and live with dignity and opportunity.

Real security means investing in people. We owe our servicemembers the resources they need to do their jobs safely, but we should never use an annual defense bill to advance a divisive political agenda that undermines civil rights, attacks vulnerable communities, or erodes the freedoms we are sworn to protect.

For the second week in a row, Republicans on the House Oversight Commitee held a hearing to demonize Black and brown communities. They want to claim that the diversity and equity policies of the American Bar Association are endangering the Constitution.

As someone who has relied on Social Security benefits, I know firsthand the importance of needing to ensure Social Security remains robust and accessible for those who depend on it. I also strongly support legislation that empowers those with disabilities with the right to work.

A year after their Big, Ugly, Cruel Bill-which made devastating cuts to Medicaid and SNAP which has already resulted in tens of thousands of Americans losing food assistance and health care, House Republicans jammed through another budget reconciliation bill.

Last night, I voted NO on the House Republican Continuing Resolution, which would extend government funding at current levels through December 4. This bill removes guardrails that prevented additional funding from being shifted to Border Patrol, giving this Admin even more unchecked authority.

Republicans have gutted Medicaid, slashed clinical trials and food assistance, and voted to send billions of dollars to an illegal war. Yet they want to talk about the American Bar Association's diversity and equity policies and call it oversight? We have real issues to address.

Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day. Black women in this country are still paid 67 cents for every dollar paid to white men. We stand in the tradition of Bay Area legends like the late freedom fighter and mentor Aileen Clarke Hernandez.

I was so honored to sit down with Antwanisha Williamson and Cynthia Adams at the Oakland Museum of a California to talk about the legacy of Port Chicago. Port Chicago is not just history - it lives in people like me, whose grandfather lived through and survived the tragedy.

As someone who was born congenitally blind and has been dependent on public transit my entire life – I know the importance of accessible, reliable public transportation. I secured $850k in federal funding for a community project -this will support LED lighting upgrades at 9 stations across CA12.

This week Republicans on the House Oversight Task Force demonized diversity, equitable education and hiring processes, and Black and brown communities. History will remember this moment, it will remember where we stood and who we defended.

While American families struggle to pay their mortgages, buy food, and afford basic healthcare Republicans on the House Oversight Committee are holding a hearing about diversity, equity, & inclusion. This is a clear attempt to divide and distract from the material issues people are facing everyday.

Education is one of the most important tools we can give our young people to set them up for success. That is why I delivered $250,000 in federal funding for Laney College & the College of Alameda's FabLabs - learning spaces where students, entrepreneurs, & makers can utilize advanced technologies.

Thank you to everyone who came out to my town hall in Albany and shared stories! Your voices and stories ground my work at home and in Washington. We are in this fight for our democracy together, and I am carrying your voices with me as I continue to fight attacks on our civil and human rights.

The East Bay is home to 16,000 small businesses, many of which are at the cutting edge of research and innovation. The Small Business Administration's Office of Investment and Innovation is an essential resource for main street businesses.
