Ottawa: AI will help us cut 40,000 public service jobs. Also Ottawa: here are 10,000 placements. Good luck! If government is replacing its own workers with AI, imagine what companies have planned.
Basic income could grow Canada's economy more than it costs With no new taxes on working Canadians, while saving us money from the even higher costs of poverty. This is pro-Canada policy.
Dr. Paul Kershaw (UBC & Generation Squeeze) says Canada's housing policy has avoided hard truths "Housing insecurity finances housing wealth gained by older generations" "We aren't gonna fix housing without an honest conversation... Do we want [home prices] to rise, stall, or fall?"
One of the few very visible Canadians shedding light on the hard truth about housing. UBC's Dr. Paul Kershaw, founder of Generation Squeeze "We cannot reward housing speculation with tax breaks without expecting home values to outpace local earnings."
You didn't build the transit line, the parks, the schools or the hospitals near your property. The public did. A land value tax simply returns some of that value to the people who created it.
South Korea's 49th PM knew AI should fund UBI. This is common sense policy now that all technologically advanced societies should adopt. "I am considering the idea of combining the massive wealth that will arise in relation to the AI great transformation with basic income." UBI works.
"As an owner of several properties myself, I believe home prices need to come down. For the sake of the next generation and our country's future." — Common Wealth Canada founder @floydmarinescu.bsky.social
Land value tax polled better than the status quo in BC. Maybe because the status quo is working great for property owner windfalls, and not much else, while we overtax income. When land values rise because of public investment, the public should get some of that value back.
We're taxing what people do earn from work MORE than what people don't earn from land. It's the opposite of what we should do and what's driving the housing crisis and poverty.
People talk about wealth inequality and wealth tax, but leave out the largest category of wealth (by far): land. It's both the #1 driver of net worths and poverty.
Canada's National Advisory Council on Poverty calls on the feds to prioritize non-market housing. The unspoken truth here: a market geared towards homes as investments will never deliver affordability.
BC residents aren't buying the idea that housing policy works. That is a mandate to think bigger - beyond pretending we can build our way out of this crisis.
Massive South Korean rally asking for a share of AI profits to be shared. The demands for common wealth AI dividends are going to get louder.
The Tyee's home run on UBI 💯 "Economic freedom begets more freedom... basic income didn't bring on a golden age of laziness; it did the opposite." "Economic freedom turned into all kinds of other freedoms: time, pleasure, joy and connection."
Albuquerque's guaranteed income pilot is funded by cannabis tax revenue. Mayor Tim Keller defended the no-strings-attached design, arguing that traditional subsidies routinely fail to achieve their goals because of bureaucratic hurdles.
Goldman Sachs on workers displaced by AI: "...likely because the same technological shifts that eliminated their positions also eroded the value of their existing skills." UBI bridges the gap between AI-driven wealth and the erosion of skill value.
Two Canadian Senators and Professors: use AI to fund Basic Income - tax machines, fund people, build an AI Dividend Fund - tax labour less - bundle with AI education & services This is mainstream policy now backed by real examples and smart people
We should be collecting rent arising from the value of nature to pay us dividends or replace taxes on incomes, productive investments, and homes.
"Common Wealth Canada propose that collecting value from Canada's land and resources would create $241B of wealth annually that could be distributed to Canadians... enough to provide each adult with up to $7,600 per year in dividends." — Robert Schalkenbach Foundation
Land value is publicly created. Taking some of that to pay us dividends gives everyone a stake in the success of our economy.
