PhD candidate @unioslo👩‍💻 | Multiple stressors in Norwegian orcas (whale watching x pollution) 🐳🇳🇴 | MULTIWHALE | Ecotoxicologist 👩‍🔬| Marine mammal mum to two girls 🧒👶 | … and a dog 🐶

Big congratulations to Dr. @clareandvik.bsky.social on a well deserved PhD thesis & defense to crown her hard work & achievements! Great opposition by Profs Krishna Das and Bjørn Munro Jenssen and organization by Johan Øvrevik. Our project MULTIWHALE is ending so watch out for publications!

I'm now Dr Andvik! Thank you everyone who watched my trial lecture and defence! It was so much fun to present to friends & family what I have been up to for the last 5 years, and I really enjoyed the discussions and questions with my opponents. Stay tuned for more orca publications, coming soon!

Steroid hormones are useful indicators of health and fitness in marine mammals, but measurements are often limited by sample size. This new #Toolbox article presents a new method for analysing steroid hormones in small blubber samples in four whale species. 🐋 Read it here ➡️ doi.org/10.1093/conp...

🧪 Whale hormones… from less than a grain of rice A new method can measure 8 hormones (like stress & pregnancy) from tiny blubber samples, meaning more insight from every biopsy. 🐋 Stranded whales showed higher stress 🇳🇴 ONE sample can now reveal pollution, diet & health Big step for conservation

Happy International Day of Women and Girl’s in Science! This is one of my favourite pictures, taken almost a year ago (?!!!) at the Orca Symposium in Tarifa. A collection of some of the most kickass, inspiring, wonderful and supportive young female scientists I know 🙌🐳❤️

Thoughts on the Arctic Frontiers conference, inc. some of the geopolitics 👇 (a 🧵 because I can’t compress it all!) Arctic Frontiers is the largest Arctic-focused conference in the world: attracting scientists, politicians, policy makers and diplomats. Given geopolitical tensions it was also timely

Happy New Year! 2025 was a whirlwind. Back to work after maternity leave with daughter #2, and despite childcare challenges great PhD progress was made! Happy to get out on fieldwork with Norwegian Orca Survey too. Stay tuned for (hopefully many) exciting papers coming in 2026! (📷 Vegard Aasen)

An honour to be invited by @miljodirektoratet.no to present our research on pollution (& other stressors) in Norwegian whales! 🐳 Fun to connect with old colleagues & discuss how results can be converted into actual change (e.g. chemical regulations). Research is nothing if nobody hears about it!
