Grateful to @swwim.bsky.social for giving this poem a home! These lines came to me in pieces as I was trying to name what it is to parent two tweens and be in the Before times of so much change to come 💜 (also happy I managed to sneak in our favorite awkward puberty joke that the kids hate:)

Thank you to Ed Simon @pghreviewofbooks.bsky.social and to Kris Collins & Joan Bauer for their leadership of the Hemingway’s Poetry Series. I wrote this poem after the fires in LA in 2025, trying to name what it is to live through all these apocalypses—impacting some far greater than others.

His name was Joan Sebastian Guerrero, a loving husband and father murdered July 13, 2026. We stand with the people of Maine, their protest, and their quest for justice for another innocent civilian murdered at the hands of ICE.

Grateful for this conversation with poet Cecily Parks. "I’ve learned to trust that my curiosity won’t lead me wrong," she says. There's so much wisdom here in a very distilled way. If you haven’t read THE SEEDS (@alicejamesbooks.bsky.social) yet, I can’t recommend it enough. 🌱

"my curiosity won’t lead me wrong"
