Several years ago, I started a ritual of making yogurt every two weeks and wrote about it on my blog in 2022. I've gotten so many questions about homemade yogurt that I created a FAQ about yogurt making and the microbiology behind it. microbialmenagerie.com/homemade-yog... #Microbiology #MicroSky
Homemade Yogurt FAQ: How to Make Yogurt, Fix Common Problems, and Understand the Science
Since I shared my Instant Pot yogurt making recipe in 2022, I’ve gotten a ton of questions about the yogurt making process (also I can’t believe I am still doing this every couple weeks…

Always love listening to @tpwky.bsky.social - their comparison of the cyclospora oocysts to balls filled with bunches of bananas!
You’ve seen the headlines: a food-borne parasite is infecting people across the US, leaving them chained to the toilet for weeks as they are ravaged by wave after wave of diarrhea. What the heck is cyclosporiasis and where did it come from? we put together this fact-filled episode for you!
Came back from vacation with a new growth from my snake plant cuttings! Only took a few months 😂
The CDC recently updated its cyclosporiasis data. There are now 4,173 confirmed cases, making it the largest US cyclospora outbreak ever. 41 states have reported cases. This is just the tip of the iceberg with states reporting several thousand more cases that are awaiting to be confirmed.
We would love to host a post-bacc in our lab to work on mechanisms of neural signaling in a cnidarian model system.
We have it on good authority that KU PREP prep.ku.edu/apply will soon be open for business! In anticipation we are taking applications for an August/September start date. PREP is a post-bacc program for graduates who intend to apply for a PhD in the biomedical sciences. See website for eligibility.
Please share with any recent college grads you know who are interested in using genetic tools in non-model organisms (🪼), sensory/neurobiology, or confocal microscopy. In addition to research mentorship, the students will have access to excellent professional development resources through OASiS 🦑🧪🧬

Has anyone made yogurt with soy milk? I've been trying to but I haven't been able to find unsweetened soy milk yet and don't think I will like the sweetened soy milk version. But I assume those added sugars help the fermentation along??

😎 Have you thought about how sunscreen affect the thousands of bacteria on the skin? Maybe it is just me but with the summer sun just around the corner, I've been curious so I looked up some research studies on this. My latest on my blog: microbialmenagerie.com/how-sunscree... #MicroSky #SciComm
