Novel writing can feel like a juggling act: You're keeping track of characters, settings, timelines, personalities, actions, and more. In my latest newsletter, I share a few tips on how to maintain consistency in your manuscript. mail.eileensproofreading.com/preview/2002...

Does it really matter if you use the Oxford comma or avoid it? Even the style guides can’t agree on this comma. Just remember to be consistent with your choice. Unless it will muddle a sentence's meaning. Then do the opposite. eileensproofreading.com/blog/f/the-o...

The Oxford comma, also known as the serial comma, is a controversial little mark. There have been disagreements on its necessity ever since its introduction in 1905 by Horace Hart, a printer at the Ox...

Myth: Your copyeditor will rip your manuscript apart and call you a terrible author. Truth: Your copyeditor will cheer you on and strive to help you succeed. In today's blog, I talk about a few misconceptions about professional copyeditors and proofreaders. eileensproofreading.com/f/six-miscon...
Six Misconceptions about Copyeditors and Proofreaders
What mistaken beliefs do authors, new ones in particular, have about copyeditors and proofreaders?

One of many reasons Copilot should not be used for research—its answers make no sense.
Don't be afraid to bend the guidelines and let your voice shine through. Comma splices for action scenes. Run-ons for rambling thoughts. Slang for a teen character. Properly perfect English is boring. mail.eileensproofreading.com/preview/2002...

Why readers quit reading your mystery. A boatload of grammar and consistency errors. Characters who are unrealistic and unrelatable. Actions that defy logic. Slow pacing. A puzzle that's unfair. #CopyEditor #CopyEditing #Mystery #Fiction eileensproofreading.com/blog/f/why-r...

Inconsistencies can pull readers out of your novel. Detective Crooks notes one large window in the room where the murder took place. But later, that large window turns into two small windows. The room didn't magically shift. #copyeditor #fiction eileensproofreading.com/blog/f/consi...

Inconsistencies can pull readers out of your novel. Detective Bell drives to a restaurant fifty miles away. He leaves home at 9:45 a.m. and arrives at 10:00 a.m. He did not speed over a hundred miles an hour, teleport, or use magic. #copyeditor #fiction eileensproofreading.com/blog/f/consi...

I had to give up on this puzzle. Not enough variety in color. 😕 It bored me. Readers also get bored without variety. Make sure your characters don't all speak the same way. Make sure your sentences vary in length. 📝 Then hire a copyeditor to catch anything else that could bore your readers.

I loved this book and will refer to it when I get around to writing my own novel. I highly recommend it to any author who wants to get their manuscript in the best shape possible before hiring a professional editor. She also has a nonfiction version.
I'll be the first to admit that editing is expensive. But you are paying for an editor's time, and their time has value. They aren't reading your writing for the pure joy of it (though it is a bonus if we are enjoying what we're reading). #AmEditing #WritingCommunity
The Real Costs of Editing. Here we go again!
We editors seem to be in this "damned if we do, damned if we don't" position. Many writers believe ripping them off, meanwhile, we need to pay our bills.
