At Brown, I'm privileged to organize an AI policy summer school where we bring grad students from across the nation together to learn about policymaking. We travel down to DC as a group and learn about policy implementation and careers, and the students conduct meetings with Congressional offices.

As local governments move more into using AI-assisted translation for important government docs, this is a very important issue to keep in mind. General purpose translation tools might not be as good when you want to execute specific tasks (or want specific info to be translated properly)

Most Multilingual benchmarks measure what models know, not what they can reliably do. Our #ACL2026 paper introduces functional benchmarks in six languages from English to Yoruba to test whether models can actually execute tasks across languages, not just answer fixed questions about them. 🧵1/n

Agents prioritize task completion rather than whether they should act. This is a consequence of how they are trained. My student @victorojewale.bsky.social has been investigating this and just wrote a (prize winning) paper arguing why (and how) we need a notion of "informed abstention". Link below.

This is absolutely nuts: hackers are hijacking high-profile Instagram accounts by simply asking Meta's AI chatbot to change the email on the account. Meta's AI does it, hacker gets password reset code, they're in. A staggering security issue www.404media.co/hackers-simp...

I've come to seriously value any opportunity I get to create a safe space for those coming up behind me. It's incredibly important - and I know this because I'm here, able to do this work, precisely because of those that chose to endure who knows what in order to create the right space for me ❣️

If we're not in academia to create safe spaces, Black graduate students get pushed out. If they, by some miracle, finish their PhDs despite the hurdles, it's accompanied by trauma and health issues.

I'm incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with this team. Truly one of the best collaborative experiences I have had to date (special s/o to our MVP @mkgerchick.bsky.social for leading this)! Check out Marissa's talk on our paper "auditing the audits" if you're at #FAccT2025! ⬇️
