Just me on my private coach home from the airport. (And yet, with me + the driver, we only take up a little bit more length than two people driving themselves in their own cars with no passengers)

The interior of an empty bus, from the middle of the bus, at night.

The colors at sunrise were *insane* this morning. The sky, the fall colors at Promontory Point, the lake...Sheesh! Sure picked a good morning to wake up early

Promontory Point, a tree-covered peninsula along the Chicago Lakefront juts out into Lake Michigan. The trees are various colors of rust, orange, and red - their fall color has peaked. The peninsula is surrounded by the turquoise-blue waters of the lake. The Chicago skyline is small in the distance, while the sky is pink and studded with beautiful clouds.

Point bathrooms "closed for the season." Anyone have success stories about getting the Park District to at least put out porta potties? People don't just stop having toilet needs for the next 6 months (this year they opened the bathrooms on 4/17)

A brown door in a stone building with a sign that says "COMFORT STATION CLOSED FOR THE SEASON". There is a blue triangular sign next to the door with the "man" and wheelchair symbols.

Omg! They added two! There's a fifth one behind the pillar! When I came back to unlock, three of five racks had *3* bikes locked to them *plus* a standalone leaning against a diff nearby pillar. 14 bikes, 5 racks. Still need more

Well I'll be! Trader Joe's finally added a 4th bike rack! Still not enough (there are at least two parked parked free-standing behind the pillar), but every new one is a tiny bit better.

An assortment of bikes locked to a set of four black staple bike racks in a shopping center. There are cars driving adjacent to the racks.

Interesting hearing this week what 200-250 million can pay for -- one uptown theater renovation, 1 L stop at State and Lake, an entire new Amtrak route from Milwaukee to Madison, or CPDs liability this year so far in misconduct suits.

I think I just got ghost trained? The green line was on-tracker and then just... Disappeared? But also sucks to be me bc I forgot about Lake St bridge construction so it'll be a shuttle to the west side anyway 🙃🙃🙃

Construction of the 4.9 mile-long State Street Subway (now part of the CTA Red Line) began in 1938 near Chicago Avenue. After five years of construction, Chicago's first subway was ready for operation and opened to the public on this day in 1943.

Hot take: I know people say don't look at your phone while walking, and especially while crossing streets. But sometimes at night I open my phone and hold the screen up just so drivers notice that there's an actual human in the stop-signed intersection they're about to blow through

Today marks five years that I have lived in Chicago. What that means, thanks to the vagaries of American immigration law, is that it is almost time to go home to London, where I will be covering Europe. It's been a time. I have learned a lot. I figured I'd write a bunch of it down:

Nothing like ~30 people (more behind me) walking in a four-lane street (bc no sidewalks) to the next bus stop after their bus broke down. At least the NB 6s were bunched and the next driver waited for us!

Several people walking in the street and on a strip of grass next to overgrown bushes and trees. There is a bus visible in the distance
