Cal leading by 5 points and coming out in the “five guys defending the goal line” defense with *10 seconds left* and the ball on the Cal 27 was one of the funniest plays I’ve ever seen. Just conceding 20 yards and a Virginia Tech first and goal to win the game for no reason. Beautiful.

The color guy for the Cal game was the baby brother in the family down the street from me. His oldest brother coached my eighth grade basketball team and he’d toddle around on the sidelines all practice. Anyway, I am one million years old.

Interestingly, the most recent discussions are being driven by centrists hoping to preempt a more radicalbacklash. Third Way, the center-left think tank, is urging moderate Democrats to back common-sensereforms to prevent the left from pushing court expansion, an unpopular position that could motivate theG.O.P. base and alienate independents. Instead, Third Way executive Lanae Erickson is suggesting thatDems pass legislation that would place 18-year term limits on justices—a cadence that would eventually leadto the appointment of two new justices every presidential term. The proposed reforms would allow thosewho have completed a full term to step in and hear cases on the lower court, or when a justice recusesthemselves from a case. “If we are going to win in 2028, we have to show that we can meet voters wherethey are in terms of their level of anger and their desire for reforms,” said Erickson. “I think if the center left isseen as just aligned with the establishment, saying Let’s just put things back together the way they were ayear and a half ago— we’re going to get beat by the bigger ideas on the left.”

I don't think the Supreme Court is going to get rid of same-sex marriage tomorrow, but when the justice who says that overturning a landmark case is "not realistic" is the *same guy who wrote the opinion overturning Roe v. Wade*, you should not take anything he says seriously

Pretty wild to see Alito describe reliance on Obergefell as "much more concrete" than reliance on Roe v. Wade, because Roe was merely about "women's ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in." If it's a Ladies Issue, he just doesn't give a shit. www.cbsnews.com/news/samuel-...

"One of the important factors we take into account in deciding whether we should reexamine a past decision is the degree to which there has been reliance on the decision," he said. "Obviously a great deal had changed in the country as a result of Obergefell. There was a lot of reliance in various ways on the decision in Obergefell." I pointed out that people thought Roe v. Wade was settled law of the land, had organized their lives around it. Overturning Roe also would have consequences. Obergefell, he said, was different. "After Obergefell, people of the same sex got married and entered into contracts … it was much more concrete," he said. "Whereas with Roe, the argument was made that it had an effect on people's ideas, women's ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in, that this would have an effect on the society. It was much more abstract than what would've been involved had we been asked to overrule Obergefell."

I believe Sam Alito wants and hopes to stay on the Supreme Court. Given that he is a lifelong Republican who loves Trump and can't stop flying coup-adjacent flags above his various homes, I also believe that if Democrats win the Senate, he is going to think very, very hard about quitting.
