#LitHodgepodge 17 Uh oh, Icozoue from #GodsOfAtalantis had one glass of wine too many, and against both her usual nature and better judgment, she's getting up to sing karaoke and you won't stop her! What's my shadow mommy singing? 😂

Digital drawing by me of Icozoue, a middle aged woman with viking style braids and a stylized wolf tattoo across the left side of her face. She wears black robes, is holding a goblet of wine, and has resting bitch face. A small crystal hangs around her neck. She is Shadow Mommy.

SATURDAY SNAP JUDGMENTS

Prompt:

17 | Provide artwork, a quick sketch, a lookalike image, or a mood board for your character, and let the people guess:
This character’s go-to karaoke song is…

[Graphic of a talking butterfly]
NO AI! USE ALT TEXT!

[Graphic of a talking crow]
I don’t wish to brag, but karaoke is sort of my thing. “Free Bird” is a real crowd-pleaser. So is “When Doves Cry.” My rendition of “Blackbird” has been known to make grizzled old war veterans weep. But ask me to sing “Fly Like an Eagle,” and I will promptly peck your eyes out.

#AwesomeCharacters Oh dang Charlie this is a hard one 😅 Mireia from GoA & Noah from Tenement are both very determined, but also easily distracted. So not them. Light is extremely mission-focused but potentially derailed bc of a pretty girl he feels sorry for/has a crush on, so not him either...🧵

#Conlangity 15 Catching up on my own prompt! In Na'aqal, verbs are even more complicated than nouns. They have: - 3 tenses: past, present & future (there are actually 2 present tenses but one has mostly died out) - 3 aspects: generic/habitual, continuing/progressive, & perfect/completed 🧵

#Conlangity Day 15 Continuing the topic of verbs, what kinds of modifications or inflections do your verbs undergo in this conlang? Do they change based on the subject? Are there verb tenses, and if so how many? Are there different moods? What do these changes look like in practice? More in 🧵👇️

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 15
[GRAMMAR] Continuing with verbs, let’s talk about modifications/inflections!
Verbs can be modified in a number of ways - tense, aspect, mood... They might change depending on what the subject is, or what the object is, or whether the verb is transitive or intransitive.
How do verbs change in your conlang?

Scruffy is having a bad day at the zoo. 🦒🐺 From an action-comedy novel about the adventures of a girl, a small robot, and the heist crew they call family. #WIPSnips #AmWriting #WritingCommunity #WriteSky (Also, hullo friends new and old! Hope you're all well! ❤️✍️)

Jebron began to slowly and laboriously raise his head. Scruffy held on for dear life. From his perch, he could see the giraffe’s big brown eyes roll around, trying to focus.

A breathless hush followed. The Great Flute Bat paused mid-note, waiting to see what would happen.

For a moment it looked like Jebron might recover. Then he blinked slowly, turned a weary half-circle, and simply gave up.

When Feinting Giraffes surrender, they snap their heads back theatrically in a swift, whiplash motion, signalling defeat.

Scruffy was tenuously attached to a currently surrendering giraffe’s head.

The Laws of Motion scrambled to find their notes on trebuchets, and after a quick conference, nodded in unison and launched Scruffy into the air at a velocity just shy of terminal.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we have a new champion! Second place just fell unconscious! Third place is airborne!”

As he soared through the air to the soundtrack of a flute solo, Scruffy caught sight of a peculiar monkey with a bedazzled derrière hunched over a pile of coins, deep in a heated argument with a snake wearing a tiny vest and doing a surprisingly competent samba.

He turned his head just in time to see what he was about to crash into as he sailed over the arena’s edge.

    It was the lion enclosure.

“Right. Of course,” he sighed, wind rushing past his face. “Why not?”

#LitHodgepodge 14 I couldn't decide on one snip, so I'm gonna be indulgent too 😄 The first two snips here are from #GodsOfAtalantis Book 1 (ch 1 & ch 33). I love me some good similes ❤️ The second two are some simple but hopefully effective metaphors from Book 2 (Xa'aba's is short bc spoilers)

Later, as the barge made its way back to the village, Mireia found her birthmother standing on the back deck, gazing out at the sun as it went down over her husband’s ocean grave. The red-gold light, like liquid orichalcum, was dancing upon the waves—the Sun Father’s kisses upon his wild lover’s body. Mireia thought of how her father’s eyes used to mirror that dancing light, which he’d gazed upon so often it had imprinted onto his soul.

----------------

Hearing these words, Mireia was filled with an emotion she couldn’t describe—something galactically beautiful and paralyzingly dreadful at the same time. The wonder that she could mean something, that she could be something, to a little girl she’d never met ... and the existential horror of feeling herself transformed into a symbol. It was like coming face-to-face with a planet-sized version of herself, as divine as the whole vast ocean, and being swallowed up and annihilated by it.
This night, a cloud blanket shrouded the sky in inky blackness, interrupted now and then by distant flashes of lightning that were mirrored in the lake’s obsidian surface. Within the remains of the temple, the flickering glow of firelight could be seen, a flower against the darkness.
Here, amid the burning braziers, a group of three dozen cultists awaited the birth of their new goddess.

----------

Xa’aba’s grin was a flash of moonlight off a hidden dagger.

WEDNESDAY WORDSMITHS

Prompt:
14 | Post and discuss a snip that makes good use of simile, metaphor, or personification.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Simile is a comparison of two things using “like” or “as.” Metaphor is more direct, equating one thing to another. Personification gives human qualities to non-human things. All three are examples of figurative language—words that go beyond their literal meaning to make a powerful impression.

#Conlangity 14 Doing my post tonight bc I don't when I'll have time tomorrow! Verbs in Na'aqal are fun because I'd say about 80% of verbs are also nouns, & vice versa. So for example, if you wanted to say someone nervously avoided something, maybe you might say "She moused out of that party" 😂

🕷️🎃Profmare on Em Street🎃🕷️@professoremily.bsky.social · 4d ago

#Conlangity 14 VEEERRRRBS! Today is one of THE most important topics. Nouns & verbs are the 2 essential ingredients in any language! We have covered nouns, so it's time for verbs. Give us some examples of verbs in your conlang. Can any nouns also be verbs? Do you have linking & auxiliary verbs?🧵

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 14
[GRAMMAR/VOCAB] Time to talk about VERBS!
Although it’s easy to think of verbs as just actions (“run, smell, laugh”), some verbs are more like states of existence (“is, was, seems”), and some are more like helpful appendages to other verbs (“must, could”).
What are some verbs in your conlang?

Tell me about your #AwesomeCharacters Who is someone your character compares themself to? This could be someone they know, or have only heard of. Someone who's example they want to live up to, or who they desperately want to avoid becoming. #WriteSky #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

#Conlangity 13 Alright, in Na'aqal we have 3 basic location words: Suut: "this, here" (close to the speaker) Hoth: "that, there" (away but still nearby) Huuda: "that, over there" (far away) Another of my favorites is "Aanji" (between), which has a few variations, such as "Aanjinet"...

#Conlangity 13 Vocab Day again! Today's theme is "locations." How do people describe where things are in your conlang? In English we say "here" & "there," but does your conlang have other positions (e.g. "WAY over there"?) What about place names - "land, town, hill," etc. How are things labeled?

Daily prompt for the #Conlangity worldbuilding game:

DAY 13

#LitHodgepodge 13 I have a lot to say about this I apologize 😅 #GodsOfAtalantis is full of archetypal settings. The ocean is particularly a recurring one, of course, with Mireia being the Sea Mother. It represents total freedom, escape from human civilization, something both beautiful & terrible

Pamela Jeong 🎃🫜@pamelajeong.bsky.social · 5d ago

#LitHodgepodge 13 Archetypal settings tap into the built-in symbolism of recognizable spaces. There’s a cave? We might uncover hidden truths. A 24/7 diner in a mystery? Prime setting for info exchange. What’s an archetypal setting in your WIP? How do you use it? #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts

Prompt:
13 | Tell us about an archetypal setting in your WIP. What is it, and how does it function in the story? How do you utilize, and possibly subvert, expected patterns? Feel free to share a snip.

Examples of archetypal settings range from the broadly symbolic, such as the maze, the garden, or the wasteland, to more genre-specific tropes, like the tavern in fantasy novels or the small town with a dark secret in thrillers.

#Conlangity Day 12 This should hopefully be a fun one! We're talking about descriptors - aka adjectives & adverbs. Give some examples of both. Are there special endings or other unique features for these words in your conlang? (Don't get into verbals or prepositions yet, that'll be for later!)

DAY 12
[GRAMMAR/VOCAB] Today is about descriptors - i.e. adjectives & adverbs!

Adjectives are words that describe nouns ("blue, small, funny") while adverbs describe verbs, adjectives or other adverbs ("very, quickly, shockingly").

How does your conlang handle these? Examples?

#SnippetShare This guy, Taruuq, a warrior of the Duun Jurai fraternity. He showed up during the tournament in the 3rd act of #GodsOfAtalantis Book 1 without me planning him, & he was the coolest dude. Alas my cast for this series is already too big, so if he comes back it'll just be for a cameo 🥲

“Your technique is quite good,” he told her, “but you must keep your muscles loose. I see you tense up sometimes, and it makes you slower and clumsier than you ought to be.”
He swung at her again. The club missed her and hit the stone floor of the stage with a piercing crack! [Redacted Hunk Lady] slipped around behind him and caught him in a chokehold.
“Thank you, jah,” she said as he gasped and struggled to free himself from her grip. “Perhaps if I make it through this, you might teach me.”
He managed to catch hold of her and flip her over his shoulder, slamming her to the ground. She groaned.
“I’d be happy to,” he panted, grinning. “I’m Taruuq, by the way.”
He struck at her once more. She dodged his club and pushed herself back up, backpedaling to put some distance between them.
“I am [Redacted Hunk Lady],” she said.
“I heard.” He came after her again. “If you live through this day, I’ll recommend you to Duun Jurai.”

MONDAYS WITH MARCEL

[Black & white picture of Marcel Proust, a man of the fin de siècle who had dark hair, sleepy eyes, and a dark mustache, sitting with his elbow propped on the back of his chair and looking pensive]

Prompt:
12 | Answer as one or each of your characters (as well as yourself, if you wish!):
What is the quality you most like in another person?

The Proust Questionnaire is a set of questions popularized by French writer Marcel Proust. Victorians answered these questions in parlor games, and modern interviewers now often use them. They can also be a great character development tool!

Today is the birthday I picked for Lady Elizabeth Hartweald! She's 16 in 1660. Alexander develops a crush on her, which she thinks is whatever—she's mostly just glad to have a male friend who will do shit. She's off-page but mentioned in 1661, then comes back in 1662 as a major character.

Astrological birth chart generated by AstroDienst with art of Lady Elizabeth on top. She's a slightly chubby aristocratic girl in 1660s garb: a pink back-closing pair of bodies (bodice) with a very low point in front and short pink sleeves slashed to show the chemise underneath, plus a white silk petticoat with gold embroidery to match gold embroidery on the bodies. Her neckline is very wide and low, but a sheer white scarf covers up her chest. She's carrying a painted Japanese-style fan and wears a pearl necklace, and tawny-gold shoes with a much narrower toe than the men's style just peek out from underneath her skirts. Her auburn hair is up in a sort of spaniel-ear, horizontally extended side-bun style with numerous ringlets hanging down.

There's also a doodled headshot, chibi-style, emphasizing long eyelashes and pink cheeks, in which she smiles blandly.

Her chart features things like a Sun in Libra (Scorpio cusp), Moon and Mars in Cancer, Mercury in Scorpio, Venus in Virgo, Ascendant Virgo, Sun square Moon, Moon trine Mercury, Mercury opposition Jupiter, Sun trine Mars, Venus trine Jupiter.

#AwesomeCharacters *looks around at all my characters* ... I think I might be chronically incapable of writing an MC who isn't curious 😂 I'd say it's most plot-relevant to Noah from #Tenement, out of all of them. But getting to the truth no matter the danger is kinda recurring theme in my WIPs.
