Alexander very rarely performs domestic tasks 😂 and is most likely sitting there bored while Klein takes care of it. But there is a scene I'd consider emotionally important in 1660, where Alexander combs lice from a kid's hair—a fem-coded activity—signifying an evolution for him. #AwesomeCharacters

I got a significant tree for today's #WhimsicalWriters!! Though I describe the wood more than the tree. One of the recurring motifs of 1661 is the meeting of old and new, the death of the ancient and its reincarnation in the young, and the layering of many timescales, as in this ch2 moment.

The path that took them from the close-mown great lawn to where the chalk-hill beech-wood still stood, shaped only gently from the ancient times, was marked only by crushed stalks of winter-yellow grass, yet the young man walked as though he knew it. He certainly knew the shape of the naked branches that arched overhead, the stripes of light they cast across his face, the colour and crunch of their brittle and faded leaves underfoot. The warm weather had coaxed the snowdrops to bloom early, and now they were almost blown, just here and there tufts of white midst the roots. But he could remember, very dimly, that once they formed a carpet, sparkling and magical, on the left and on the right—and though they’d crept out of their bounds in the Aldridges’ absence, the way could still be found by walking between them. If the occupiers had ever done so, they would have eventually found, ‘round the bulk of an ancient oak that predated Parliament-men, the Aldridges, and perhaps the beeches themselves, a wall of sunset-coloured bricks webbed over with moss. The gate was open, as Alexander expected, and as he passed it, the man who was hunched over the weeds in the corner rose and took off his hat.

My intuition for Alexander is something like this: "cried" - one of my fave dialogue tags, the perfect medium intensity for loud but short of YELLING. 😂 "leapt" - characteristic movement "thought" - I love to tell you about his opinions, which are many. Bonus: "did not". #AwesomeCharacters

Sept. 2, 1666: The Great Fire of London starts. It burns for 4 days, & destroys much of the city. In it's wake, starving Londoners were saved by the Dutch, who gave out free eels. A grateful king granted them free mooring & a monopoly on eels sales. A lovely story. Except it didn't happen. 1/5 🧪🗃️

There is smoke and flames and the works. Ms. O'Leary's cow would be proud. This is an epic fire. Not just a great fire, but THE Great Fire. And you without your hotdogs and marshmallows. There are numbers on the map which correspond to a key which I've cut off here, so you can't see it. But this is a reworking of the city view map in tweet #4 (just with flames), so you can see it better there. For now, know that the numbers mark out important places in the city.

As the existence of the trans and queer community is under constant and increasing threat across the world – with alt-right political rhetoric in the West seeking to rupture solidarity for and within the global queer community – the work of the historian has never been more vital. Historians have long found solidarity and recognition of queer experiences and practices with individuals and groups of the past. In concert with the wealth of current research being produced in trans and queer medieval studies, this panel session responds to the urgency of this present moment. In the face of existential threats, we recognise the importance of finding community with one another, which includes understanding our community has a history. This panel session seeks not only to contribute to transtemporal and scholarly trans and queer community building, but to better understand what historical trans and queer communities and practices may have looked like – including the mechanisms and structures that attempted to preclude such community formations. Engaging with and making legible such histories constitutes an act of compassion both with historical actors and with living members of our community today. It also constitutes an act of resistance, by finding existence and continuity in community.
