Delighted to be at this year's Nightingale Lecture @unikent.bsky.social, supported by @memsunikent.bsky.social and @camems.bsky.social, to hear Prof. Mark Bailey on the late medieval economy. We start with Sheila Sweetinburgh's introduction.
A triumphal arch assumes a triumph. A triumph assumes a slave whispering in the triumphant soldier's ear 'Remember, you too are human.' An arch does not work without a victory, its military general, and a slave ensuring humility. Those add up to a lot of preconditions to fulfil.
Some nice #fragment news here:
📚 A medieval mystery solved nearly a century later. Girton Fellow Dr James Wade and Dr Katie Walter of @sussex.ac.uk have reunited six lost pages of a medieval bestseller with its manuscript, now held 3,500 miles away at Yale. Read the full story: 🔎 🔗 www.girton.cam.ac.uk/news/reunite...
While on Guernsey this last weekend, I went on a little pilgrimage to see the wall-paintings in the tiny chapel of St Apolline.
Ahead of the launch today of the manuscript fragments of Guernsey, on which @tamarajatkin.bsky.social and I have been working with the Island Archives for the last couple of years, I have written up one of my favourite finds: lostmss.org.uk/highlights - Hidden Devotion on Guernsey

I am sure that textura praescissa, showoff that it is, gets all the fun.
As we enter the 'ber months, we lay down our dusty scrolls and sacred candles and somberly pose the question to you, dear reader...which Gothic protagonist do you identify with best?
This year's Fifteenth Century Conference, hosted by @memsunikent.bsky.social, has begun. We are being taken along thoroughfare and across the seas on our first session.

Sub specie aeternitatis, Caligula was not so bad. He only made his horse into a senator. And it was just his boots that were little.
And a play with an interesting backstory! You will want to read @tamarajatkin.bsky.social's article, co-written with J. R. Mattison, when it comes out...
www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... Working on and with fragments is always an excitement and privilege, but as a scholar who sometimes writes about drama, identifying one of these fragments as derived from a fifteenth-century secular play text has been particularly thrilling.
Great to see this also being picked up by the BBC with more eloquent quotes from my collaborator @tamarajatkin.bsky.social than I could ever muster: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Tell me what you know about the literary culture of medieval Guernsey, then read this article with some exciting #manuscript #fragment news. What has made this such fun is collaborating with Guernsey's archivists and the ever-excellent @tamarajatkin.bsky.social : www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026...
That's too kind of you, @thecelticist.bsky.social . Really, too kind: congrats should go to Callum at Guernsey Island Archives who do the sleuthing and to @tamarajatkin.bsky.social for all her insights. In short, medievalists are great at team work!
Congratulations to @drdavidrundle.bsky.social on this exciting #MedievalSky research! 📚
Good to see the Guardian story in hard copy: as I am a 'manuscript expert', you would expect me to want to touch the page. The fragments themselves will soon be on the Lost Manuscripts website: lostmss.org.uk And @tamarajatkin.bsky.social has an article in preparation on a particularly exciting one.
I was first contacted by Callum at the Island Archives in 2024, and it feels like barely a month goes by without a new discovery! Shout out not only to him and @drdavidrundle.bsky.social but also J.R Mattison, with whom I’ve been writing about the Griselda fragment. Excellent collaborators all!

'Drought and heatwave - working together' Yes, I suppose they are, the nefarious so-and-sos.
A. C. de la Mare famed for her ability to identify scribes' hands: It is rarely possible to date and localize a written text from the evidence of script alone. Few manuscripts are securely dated, and a palaeographer's judgement, based on personal experience and visual memory, may be mistaken
A reminder that registration for this year's 15th Century Conference ends on 21st August. Don't miss out on the stimulation and the fun!

Really enjoyed the exhibition on that most gifted of Elizabethan poets, Christopher Marlowe, as a son of Canterbury at the city's Beaney Museum. Congratulations to @memsunikent.bsky.social's @loughnrv.bsky.social and the team on a stimulating show.
