this was difficult to read, but it's important to know people are currently in prison for 50+ years for attending a protest + one wasn't even at the protest, but got sentenced for 30 years for "concealing" anarchist zines

Cartoonists are some of the few bold voices left in mainstream media. Both @cathywilcox.bsky.social and @fionakatauskas.bsky.social have fought for space and held their own in a very male dominated field for decades. Thank you Fiona and Cathy making space for women, and all your wit and insight!
#China: We are deeply concerned by reports that prominent artist Gao Zhen has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of slandering China’s “heroes and martyrs” for his work depicting Mao Zedong. Art is not a crime. We call for his immediate release.
⚠️ Cartooning for Peace calls on the French authorities to ensure that the situation of this prisoner of conscience is also included on the agenda of discussions with Saudi Arabia, given the state of freedom of opinion, freedom of expression and freedom of the press in that country.
📢 [ALERT] #saudiarabia Whilst the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, is currently being hosted by Emmanuel Macron as part of an official visit to France, CFP recalls that the Saudi political cartoonist Al Hazza sentenced to 23 years in prison for his cartoons.

I am in awe of political cartoonists. I really am. They look at current news, pick an issue, then satirise it to make a point about stupidity, corruption, or something. A good cartoonist - like Cathy Wilcox - is usually the most enjoyable part of the news. Sometimes they’ve inspired me to research.
Slop. My @smh @theage cartoon.

This is an extraordinary testament from a conscientious, humane cartoonist documenting a day-and-a-half of hatred unleashed by his simple contention that it’s cause for concern when a detainee dies in the process of restraint & arrest by police.
