Just got an email from “Anthony Horowitz” telling me how much he admired my writing, and keen to find out more. I know there’s also one from “Thomas Pynchon” doing the rounds. Anybody else getting fan mail from famous writers??

'It has been a long time coming, and eagerly awaited by many, and in this year of the 90th anniversary of James’s death, it does justice to the man and does not disappoint.' @drfrancisyoung.bsky.social on FOR THE DEAD REMEMBER: THE LIFE OF M.R.JAMES by Darryl Jones @oxfordunipress.bsky.social

I reviewed @profdarryljones.bsky.social's new biography of M. R. James. Long-awaited by fans, and surely the most important book about MRJ yet to appear this century: drfrancisyoung.com/2026/09/28/r... 📚👻📜

Things I was frightened of as a child: 1. Carry on Screaming. Specifically, Oddbod. More specifically, the way Oddbod's finger falls off, Kenneth Williams puts it in a device and grows a whole other Oddbod. I don't know why, but as a kid this absolutely freaked me—the fuck—out.

It lives! I hope Conan Doyle would be pleased to see what he came to see as his most important novel receive serious scholarly treatment here, even if he might not have approved of all my editorial decisions. If you’re interested in spirits, science, and the end of the world, do check it out!

“ [Dylan] Thomas’s final words were apparently “the End is in Eden” which, as Eagleton tartly points out, is just one more of the old windbag’s “metaphysical vacuities”. Now then, Kathryn Hughes and The Guardian, surely you know that referring to a Welsh writer as a windbag is racist stereotype?
