looking at the menu for a local place that has a BBQ brisket sandwich named the "Fidel Castro." Yes, BBQ brisket, known as the cuisine of revolutionary communist leaders. Big banners of Che and Fidel and Marx flying over every rural Texas BBQ joint. Red scarves for napkins around every chin

I spent the 00's watching friends get jobs in the anime industry, and I wondered if I was just a sucker for keeping my boring day job, that I shouldn't be working that angle for a paycheck. Well, turns out I still have the boring day job, and I never had to pretend to be excited about mediocre anime

This is ragebait so not directly quoting it, but the question misses the point: studying those topics trains you to THINK, which ia something EVERYONE needs to know regardless if you use those specific skills.

when I worked for General Cinema, they also owned Pepsico's largest bottler company, so every time someone asked for a Coke at the concession stand we had to respond with "is Pepsi okay?" And it usually was. But sometimes people got huffy. Atlanta is a Coke town

if I might say more things about comics and AA in an old man voice: back in my day you could table at these things for cheap, make your zines for cheap, sell them for cheap, and get into them for cheap. Now? Everything is $$$. Everyone is trying to wring every last $ out of every aspect

I still believe that comics are a democratic medium -- just pencil and paper to make something, which is still sort of affordable -- but I don't think it's democratically distributed. The systemic costs to play grow worse and worse each year and push more people out. Innovation remains key.

It's not easy to make original stuff or head out to shows where audiences are ambivalent or hostile to things they don't recognize. I think there's a lot of work and time required to cultivate audiences, in an industry where people don't have the resources to return to shows year after year.

I think there's a framing around indie comics that what holds people back is just fear of engaging with people. I don't think it addresses underlying economic pressures; like it's hard to pay for a table and not see a return. Maybe that manifests itself as fear, but it's rooted in something tangible

LRT: I don't have the numbers, but from the worried emails I get about the zine show, and the nervous emails I've received in the past about anime con AA's, and the conversations I've been in, the answer is "no." If people were making money, I'd never be in a lot of those conversations

are these the people that threw all their LPs into the dumpster the minute CDs came on the market? Spotify happened and they threw all those CDs away? Netflix started streaming and they took all their DVDs to the thrift store? I guess they are.

had a convo about book bans with a right wing guy who was OK with schools banning books because 'everything is on the internet.' These people have the object permanence of literal infants, they are d-u-m-b.
