One of the things about discourse around The Odyssey is that only a couple of movies a year manage to get into 'the discourse' now, so everyone has to have an opinion on them In the old days there would be a Peter Greenaway film out by now to distract everyone & give them something new to talk about
Combine that with a century of increasingly corporatized and PR-hyped actual innovations, and you’re gonna yield a bunch of callow goofuses thinking they can manifest the most absurdly impractical and useless shit into reality because it was in a shitty book or movie.
All those "Star Trek predicted portable comms tech" arguments ignore that the show was reflecting shit that already in motion and making waves at the time. Solid state electronics had already brought the portable transistor radio craze, which TOS was extrapolating from.
