Democratic candidates, steal this idea. The @epi.org just released a calculator showing how Trump's immigration terror campaign is sucking money out of social programs. It shows how, in addition to ruining immigrants' lives, it's also ruining the lives of everyone else.

The Cost of Deportations Calculator

The Trump administration is taking billions of _your_ taxpayer dollars to pay for mass deportations. The Cost of Deportations Calculator shows what could this money be used for instead.

We got some quotes from @wyden.senate.gov about his wild report yesterday about banks withholding suspicious activity reports about Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking empire because they wanted to keep the lucrative relationship. Crazy conduct and Wyden has some good solutions for it.

Sen. Wyden Report: Banks Systematically Ignored Jeffrey Epstein’s Crimes - The American Prospect

The report shows how employees at Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, and JPMorgan helped to hide Epstein’s activities because he was a load-bearing part of their ‘wall of cash.’

prospect.org

For @prospect.org today, I wrote about the big report Sen. Wyden dropped about how bankers gave Epstein a pass bc he was generating a ton of money for them. The report names a lot of names of specific bank execs and also calls out CBS, Sen. Blackburn and Scott Bessent.

A third detainee died after being held at Delaney Hall, according to Rep. Rob Menendez (D-NJ), who said the death wasn’t disclosed to the public by Immigration and Customs Enforcement because the agency recently changed how it reports deaths of detainees. www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/08/04/t...

A Third Delaney Hall Detainee Has Died, New Jersey Congressman Says

Rep. Rob Menendez said ICE confirmed details of the death, which took place weeks ago, to him during an oversight visit to the facility on Monday.

Edwin Jeovanny Lopez Cornejo didn't deserve to die in a concentration camp. No one deserves to die in a concentration camp. Every single death at ICE's hands, every day this modern day gestapo and these modern day concentration camps exist, is a crime against every single one of us.

A 39-year-old El Salvadoran man, who was being held at Delaney Hall, has died, the man's family says. He's the father of a 12-year-old US citizen daughter and has lived in the country for nearly 20 years. www.thecityreporter.nyc/2026/08/03/s...

Trump's tariffs allow companies to double dip into our wallets. First they used his tariffs as an excuse to raise prices on us. Now they're getting our tax dollars via these so-called refunds. The whole thing is a massive wealth transfer from us to the already-rich.

Congressman Greg Casar@repcasar.bsky.social · 2d ago

Apple got a $2.2 billion tariff refund. Amazon got $600 million. Trump is sending the "refunds" to the companies, not working people. Every single cent of these refunds should go back to American consumers.

Update here: I'm working on a 'field guide to 287(g)' for local journalists and community advocacy groups, including a rundown of FOIA search terms + program documents to include for more effective public records requests.

What we do know comes largely from local public records requests from journalists, like @rachelspacek.bsky.social at @investigatewest.bsky.social, who secured the service agreement for the Owyhee County sheriff's office in Idaho.

Trump wants to take airport security back to the days before 9/11, when it was run by private contractors who failed to stop multiple men with boxcutters from making it through. My colleague Zach Groz and I are doing a series on it for @prospect.org. Here's the first installment:

TSA Privatization Returns Airport Security to a Dangerous Past - The American Prospect

The Trump administration wants airport screening to revert to the way it was before 9/11, when private security companies were in charge.

Towards the end of this story, there's a line that suggests grocery stores are going to suffer because of Trump's cuts to SNAP, and quotes the grocery industry lobbyist saying the cuts will translate to billions of lost sales. But grocery store financial docs show that sales are up.

NPR@npr.org · 2d ago

SNAP, also known as food stamps, has seen a rapid and consistent participation decline since last July. The drop comes as the program faces historic cuts and changes. n.pr/4w5XSc9

here is my new least favorite recipe 1. wear a mask everywhere 2. test positive for covid anyway 3. call doctor, bc she said to do that so she can prescribe paxlovid via phone 4. get referred to urgent care, bc she has no time 5. pay $50 at urgent care 6. get denied paxlovid script

Agricultural work is difficult. It requires training, skill and experience. You can't just hop into a field and perform at the same level as professionals do. Some lawmakers like to pretend that this is all just "unskilled" manual labor, and that couldn't be farther from the truth.

@ufwfoundation.bsky.social has had a campaign called “Take Our Jobs” since 2010 in which they invite celebs and electeds to work alongside farmworkers for a day. It’s the one Colbert did and Cory Booker has done. More people need to participate. ufwfoundation.org/cory-booker-...
