if you write mecha, study real animals. you're gonna learn a fucking ton from how nature solves these problems, and you're gonna discover some very interesting limitations that help you understand when machines break, why, and how other pilots would exploit them

they do actually calcify their exoskeleton, but not to the same degree a lot of other crustacea do, keeping it in specific areas where load is required in a much smarter way the trick is an endocuticle, which is kinda like if plywood plates were twisted into threads that don't buckle under load

I don't want to step on @pc98bot.gang-fight.com's toes here, they're definitely the account to follow for screenshots, but look at these! They're beautiful! I desperately want more games like this. Games in order: Cybernetic Highschool IV - Top o Nerae! Advanced Power Dolls 2 Popful Mail Rusty

A screenshot from the PC-98 game Cybernetic Highschool IV: Top o Nerae! from Gainax (the anime studio house that made TTGL and Evangelion, yes). It is a space scene, with the blackness of space accented by sweeping bands of dark purple and blue and dotted with stars. An incredible amount of silvery, conical/arrowhead shaped spaceships are lined up, the ones in the foreground in greater detail, lines of the ships extending deep into the background. Dead center of the screen a larger ship enters the frame from right to left and reflects the space around it, making the ship look blue and purple and silvery all at once. If you've ever watched Gunbuster, imagine that one song playing as this screenshot plays out.A screenshot from the PC-98 game Advanced Power Dolls 2. It's an opening credits scene, crediting "FM MIDI Sound design" to one Hiroto Saitoh. A half-body short of a woman with short bobbed hair and piercing eyes stares at the viewer. She's wearing a retro scifi red and black bodysuit and has one hand on her hips. The background is black, but she's standing in front of some abstract shapes of the same colour as her bodysuit.A scene from the PC-98 game Popful Mail. This is the main game screen for the game, and in typical PC-98 game fashion shows the "game" window nested within a larger static border. The game screen shows a top down oldschool RPG adventure game, with a castle surrounded by a moat, and many trees dotted around. The main characters' sprite stands on a bridge. The larger border screen is incredibly fancied up; in addition to statistics and items the player can use, there are white on blue frescoes evoking greek art. The overall image is incredibly bright and colourful with primary colours popping off the screen.A scene from the PC-98 game Rusty. The main colours used here are grey, black, and red. The image shows a graveyard at dusk. Some of the gravestones are adorned with wreaths and flowers. A pop-out window shows several men looking concerned.

I'm sorry I keep flooding your feed with my nonsense but I forgot RetroArch can do shaders. Look at this. It's ✨gorgeous✨ If I ever won the lottery I'd fund a studio to just make games like this again. (Shaders are Sonkun's shaders. I'm using the slot-mask japan normal composite here.)

Early morning Llen lore. I can't understand Donald Duck. I don't know why, maybe I've got weird audio processing issues. But I straight up can never understand anything he says. Not a single word, not a single rendition of Donald Duck across his many voice actors. It's fine I guess.

A screenshot from the PC-98 game Dragon Half. The game window exists as a small 4:3 window within a larger 16:9 frame. The smaller window shows a bright, colourful top down pixel art rendition of a town, including houses, trees, dirt paths bounded by grass, and a single character sprite. The larger window "border" is a static image containing larger pixel artwork of the main characters Mink, Lufa, and Pia (with Mappy on her head). Extra information such as stats, the town name, and party composition are included. A text box at the bottom shows only Japanese text. It's the same as the image in the quoted post, but this time there's a fancy CRT shader overtop.

LOOK AT THIS. It's so goddamn pretty. The dithering! The colours! Nuts to photorealism, I want more of this.

I finally got PC-98 games working on my Thor and y'all lemme tell you: My joy at finally making it work is only somewhat eclipsed by how beautiful these games are. Why did we ever stop making gorgeous pixel art games like this, good lord. Anyway I'm considering streaming some of these.

Hey uh, no stream today. Between getting laid off and losing my paypal and just... Uuuughhhhhhhh I can't do it today. Go get yourself some candy in my name. If you're in Canada, get yourself a wunderbar. They're my favourite. See y'all next week, and happy halloween.
