AITA for killing off my old boss’ network of psychopaths?

First things first: I’ve known this guy practically forever, and he’s not a bad guy. Does he use his comatose daughter as an excuse for practically everything? Yes.

Did he kind of tease me with a will-they-or-won’t-they vibe for way too long without even asking me out? Yeah…but that one was mostly a misunderstanding, I can see that now.

Has he casually murdered dozens of people to stay alive? Yeah—but, to be fair, so have I.

Which brings me to the point: The murder thing is something I’ve been trying to stop. I’ve decided to go cold turkey, even if it means I have to die, because ethics are important, right? (He used to know that…)

My task force is in a good place, it’s crystal clear we can’t save his daughter, and his new pet psycho is kind of wrecking things for everybody, so it seemed like the perfect time to take out the network of psychopaths enabling both of us and end things once and for all…

But now he’s super mad at me, and I’m worried he won’t save me if I change my mind about the cold-turkey thing.

The doctor was wrong, Matthias was sure of it.
Nothing good would come of giving Mom the sword.

The doctor wagged his index finger. “You can do something now that you’re seventeen, can’t you?
What is it? Drinking? Driving? Sex?” He snapped his fingers.
“Thinking? No, that can’t be it.”

Day one, he thought, fighting panic.
Robbed a goddamn jewelry store.

“Everyone is surprised at the reveal,” she said. “We play a long game.”

“What you have just done,” said the doctor, “is fail your final test. Failed it utterly and completely. You are without a doubt a psychopath, and an impatient and tasteless one at that. As a psychopath, I would give you middling marks.”

“Why do we need to find him, exactly? Is he going to try to kill us, or something?”
“Not directly, no. Probably not.”
“Mm-hm. Is he going to kill us indirectly, then?”
“Yes.”

“Dead men spend no cash, mate,” said Berat. He swirled the beer in his hand. “I’ve made promises to people. You understand? People. And you’re the one who introduced them to this ‘perfect yield’ on every batch. Now they’re hooked on it—profits through the fucking roof. Millions more each week. There’s no way either of us could cover that. If you don’t come through, I’ll need to throw you to them to save my own hairy arse.”

They weren’t going to destroy the coins. The coins were going to destroy them.

“Oh, fuck it,” she growled.
She knew what she had to do.
Groaning and shaking, she steeled herself,
reversed the knife and plunged it deep into her flesh.
