1995: Man-Spider in Spider-Man: The Animated Series (that 90s spider-man show, you might say)
1999: Plant-Man turns Spider-Man into Man who is Spider
2003: Lady kisses Spider-Man, he turns into spider, gets pregnant, dies, gives birth to self
2005: Dies again, comes back with powers that are retconned 2 years later

Something I wrote about Gerry Conway after hearing of his passing last month

Some context: At 13, Gerry Conway had his letter printed in Fantastic Four 50. At 16, he wrote his first comic. At 19, he was writing for Amazing Spider-Man, taking over for Stan Lee. At 20, he had written The Night Gwen Stacy Died, which effectively ended the silver age of comics and permanently altered their course.

His Peter was rebellious, angry, sarcastic and flawed, carrying the weight of his bizarre and chaotic life with him. As well as Peter, he developed the inner lives of characters like Mary Jane and Robbie Robertson.

He went on to be co-creator of The Punisher, Tombstone, Glory Grant, Hammerhead, The Jackal, Tarantula and Ben Reilly. I make sure to specify co-creator because he would have done the same; My one small interaction with him was on Twitter 5 years back. I said that "the Carnage series by Gerry Conway is seriously underrated". He replied:
"Correction: By Gerry Conway and Mike Perkins, artist extraordinaire." Always credit the artist.

He had some phenomenal collaborations with artists in his Spider-Man books, from John Romita to Gil Kane, Ross Andru and Alex Saviuk. On Spectacular Spider-Man he worked with artist Sal Buscema, who also passed away this year. It's a stellar run and well worth a read - particularly the Tombstone story, where Robbie finally gets the spotlight. He made stories that were tragic and eloquently written, but also ones that were funny and absurd, knowing they both have their place. His iconic send-off for Norman Osborn came not that long before the spider-mobile crashed into the Hudson. RIP to one of the best to do it.
