"What is uniquely African about the African AI landscape? Is it because those working on it are from/based in the African continent? Because it focuses on African languages/datasets? Or does it adhere to distinctly African values?" @hellinanigatu.bsky.social aial.ie/blog/worksho...

An Introspective Look at the African AI Landscape: An organizer’s reflection

Science isn't a statistical gachapon. The contempt these clowns have for the bedrock processes underlying knowledge production & scholarship truly knows no limit. It was bad enough when—as a scholar in an interdisciplinary field—I had to deal w/ quants reviewing qualitative/humanistic papers badly.

This is the future of scientific papers. Instead of a PDF, the paper is an AI agent that you can talk to, ask questions, run analyses. No more digging through supplements - just ask the paper directly: "what p-value cutoff was used in Fig 3B? Re-run at 0.01." www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Me planning the vacation: For the next 2 weeks, I will relax, meditate and be with myself. Meanwhile AIES people this morning: Please upload the camera-ready paper by this week.

In Hamburg, usage of deep learning based vision methods are branded as 'good surveillance'. It is completely unclear what purpose is it solving and how good are they. Classification methods like actions, age and re-identification are highly error-prone and brittle.

This pattern recognition in video data was already tested at Berlin's Südkreuz train station in 2017. What's new about doing it with AI?

What's new is how the procedure is justified: as supposedly particularly sensitive to data protection, thereby legitimizing a kind of "good surveillance." This enables a new political constellation: data protection commissioners and the Green Party gave the green light, and in Hamburg, and now also in Berlin, Saxony, and Baden-Württemberg, police legislation has been amended to allow the police to collect data for AI training and forward it to external developers. With these laws, the police become a kind of gatekeeper for AI development in the security sector.

I went to the BIPOC support group for academics earlier this week. This was the first time I have seen all of us being extremely disturbed and upset with the current events. Things are hard. It is important than ever to show love and uplift your fellow community members.

intensive lobbying by BigAI has left the AI Act hollow. risks like “loss of control” are mandatory for providers to assess while risks to fundamental rights & society as a whole including privacy, data protection, non-discrimination & risks from CSAM & non-consensual intimate imagery are left out

One cool thing I liked from 'Adolescent Identity Expression through Transdisciplinary, Computational, Creative Writing' paper by Gifford et al (including @amyko.phd), is expressing identities via coding (mainly multilingual translation) and learning peers' culture through classroom discussions.

So proud of my student and collaborators' ACM #icer2026 papers this year on joy, identity expression, and help-seeking community! dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/... dl.acm.org/doi/10.1145/...

I don't normally post about new papers coming out, but this one gets an exception: My student has just had her first paper (and my first paper with my own PhD student) accepted to AIES! We look at how speech technology research engages, or rather doesn't engage, with questions of surveillance!

Happy to announce that three first-authored papers got accepted at #AIES2026! The topics include resisting surveillance, AI-washing, marketing and computer vision. Happy to connect with fellow researchers at AIES! Details of my papers:

AI ethics hardly has anything to do with the use of AI anyway. It is about thinking critically who benefits from this technology, who structurally carries the burden, by whom it is built, from which ideologies and how this manifests in its harmful societal impact.

TIME SENSITIVE: NeurIPS is launching a new Affinity Support Pilot Program! Award recipients will receive support to present their research at #neurips2026 affinity events. We encourage you to thoroughly read the requirements before applying. The deadline is July 20 AoE. (1/2)

🚨 I’m still seeking an emergency reviewer for an ARR May 2026 submission on LLM-based image segmentation. Please DM me if you’re qualified to review for ARR (at least 2 ACL/AI conference pubs and 1 other pub), and could complete a review for it in the next couple days! 🙏

As local governments move more into using AI-assisted translation for important government docs, this is a very important issue to keep in mind. General purpose translation tools might not be as good when you want to execute specific tasks (or want specific info to be translated properly)

Most Multilingual benchmarks measure what models know, not what they can reliably do. Our #ACL2026 paper introduces functional benchmarks in six languages from English to Yoruba to test whether models can actually execute tasks across languages, not just answer fixed questions about them. 🧵1/n
