For too many people, leasehold has become the ultimate con. In a debate on the issue this week, I called for new legislation to simplify the system and make it fairer and more transparent, especially for housing association residents.

My constituents tell me they feel “prisoners” in their home, in properties owned by the St Mary Magdalene and Holy Jesus Trust, which exploits a charity loophole to deny lease extensions. The Government s Leasehold Reform Bill must mean liberty for them!
