I showed an artist friend my recent sketches. They were impressed until I mentioned that I used references. Then they were obviously disappointed. What is this mentality of "art is only good when made without references"?

Reminder to offer your sons books (and audiobooks) you're not sure they will read (or listen to), just in case they do. My 12yo is 3 hours in on Little Women. Giving boys fiction that makes it clear girls and women have a rich interior life is important, now and always, I think.

So seeing as Twitter cant go 5 minutes without spreading some kinda hate, why dont we spread somthing posative! Tell me what you've been working on? Got any projects? Any art your proud of? painted a model? Gardening? WHATS GOT YOUR MOJO GOING?!

this is a thing i saw someone post about here before that i worry about. you can look at a picture in one split second but a screen reader takes many seconds to read a long text description. so instead of describing every detail one can imagine how getting to the point of what's relevant is nicer.

Even if a description is short & well done, I often wish there were no description at all. Get to the point, already! How ironic that striving after access can actually create a barrier. When I pointed this out during 1 of my seminars, a participant made us all laugh by doing a parody: “Mary is wearing a green, blue, & red striped shirt; every fourth stripe also has a purple dot the size of a pea in it—”

“You’re killing me,” I said. “I can’t take any more of that!”

Now serious, she said it was clear to her that none of that stuff about Mary’s clothes mattered, at least if her clothes weren’t the point. What mattered most about the image was that Mary was holding her diploma and smiling. “But,” she wondered, “do I say, Mary has a huge smile on her face as she shows her diploma or Mary has an exuberant smile or showing her teeth in a smile & her eyes are crinkled at the edges?”

It’s simple. Mary has a huge smile on her face is the best one. It's the don't-second-guess-yourself option.
