"As part of our campaign for basic income pilots in England, we’ve worked with Burnham many times in his role as Greater Manchester mayor. He even delivered the keynote talks at our Basic Income North events in 2022 and 2023." Will Andy Burnham do anything to advance UBI now that he's PM? We'll see

"At UBI Lab, we believe basic income has the potential to fundamentally rebalance economic power towards ordinary people" We're in today's @bigissue.com, writing about what next steps new Prime Minister @andyburnham.bsky.social should take to pilot a UBI in the UK ✍️ #BasicIncome #AndyBurnham

It's disappointing to see the lack of engagement from candidates on a basic income pilot, apart from @geraldinecoggins.bsky.social. We hope that the next mayor continues the work that had started under @andyburnham.bsky.social to make a basic income pilot a reality. @bevcraig.bsky.social

Voting opens in the Greater Manchester mayoral byelection today 🗳️ We asked every candidate whether they would keep the previous mayor's promise to launch a #BasicIncome pilot in the region. Only the Green Party's @geraldinecoggins.bsky.social confirmed that she would. #GreaterManchester #UBI

Could Andy Burnham introduce a universal basic income?

Andy Burnham has said that he wants to bring a sense of hope into politics – could that see him introduce a universal basic income in the UK?

We've heard back from our first candidate! @geraldinecoggins.bsky.social of @greenparty.org.uk has confirmed to @ubilabmanchester.bsky.social that if elected she'll keep Burnham's promise to develop and deliver a Basic Income pilot in Greater Manchester 🥳 Will the other candidates follow suit? 🤔

Last week, we wrote to every candidate in the upcoming byelection for Mayor of Greater Manchester. We asked if they'd keep the promise made by outgoing mayor @andyburnham.bsky.social to develop and deliver a Basic Income pilot in Greater Manchester. That commitment should be honoured. #Manchester

One of the reasons we need universal basic income plus higher taxes on the rich is to boost the spending power of the bottom 60% and in doing so, reorient our economy around the needs of the majority of people who comprise it. As inequality has increased, our economy has adjusted to meet rich wants.

Around 70% of the U.S. economy depends on consumer spending. As wealth concentrates in the richest 10%, the rest of America can’t afford to buy enough to keep the economy running. This is a huge problem — and even America’s most powerful CEOs are starting to sound the alarm.

The Basic Income Movement hosted a briefing on basic income and regrowth to MPs in Westminster last week It was wonderful to have the chance to speak to MPs about why #UBI is good for the economy and society. We hope that MPs continue to explore the possibilities of basic income!

Coverage in the @bigissue.com 📰⬇️ We believe this is the best way for @andyburnham.bsky.social to follow through on the commitment he made in his election manifesto: ▫️ "The logical next step, after the success of our Housing First pilot, is to bring forward a #BasicIncome pilot" #BasicIncomeMCR
