If you take the time to explore Christian’s diagrams, (as his students would be doing), you will soon find they get you thinking and realising all sorts of novel relationships between concepts you have not connected before. A clear indicator of a great explanatory model.

The focus on memory is the focus on the product. Much better to focus on the act of learning, the process.
When I wrote Teaching Meaning, people commented on how well it captured teaching and learning. Yet, I didn't need to refer to storage or retrieval at all. Except, in this passage:

Sue Cowley@suecowley.bsky.social · last wk.Just seen someone posting (elsewhere) about 'developing teacher agency' while making their teachers use a set of specific steps in class based on a very narrow view of learning. The term 'checking for understanding' has become a proxy for compliance imho.

I had a play at making a stock and flow model today, to represent a continuous fermenter. A stock within a stock.
How Christian builds a single formal model that can then be used by students to test and extend their understanding of multiple concepts.

When it comes to education, this is a better definition IMO: Learning is structural coupling. than: Learning is a change in the LTM. The latter might be more useful in efficiency views and measurement, but not in overall curriculum or educational views.
Another possible negative effect of grade retention: lower earnings later in life. A new study from Texas finds temporary gains in test scores, but also lower high school graduation rates and, by age 26, substantially lower earnings. With important caveats. wp.me/p2nWPo-6e3
