Congratulations to Julian @sccenglish.bsky.social on reaching this milestone. The Fortnightly is a consistently enlightening read and has been an avenue to a number of wonderful new books and experiences I would never otherwise have discovered. Here’s to the next 200!

A colleague of mine told me confidently the other day that “kids from Michaela School really struggle at university, and loads drop out”. Apparently this has been documented somewhere… but they were a bit vague on exactly where. Anyone?

How do we develop independent learners - have been left with lots to think about from this with @paulclinepsy.bsky.social and @mikehobbiss.bsky.social Plus practical ideas around task design, effective homework, and how the KBCP model can help us improve course design and teaching in this area

This was a fun discussion with @mikehobbiss.bsky.social and @benwhitewaldenkent.bsky.social on how we can foster independent learning in our students, taking in motivational theory, and the KBCP framework along the way (this time with the right post quoted with the actual link!) #EduSky

Despite mostly saying they split attention equally or prioritise lower attainers, this study using classroom vignettes found that the presence of a higher achiever reduced the time teachers spent on lower achievers... ... leading to a magnificent paper title! 😂 econpapers.repec.org/paper/cesces...

I hope someone draws this wonderful story about Tom Stoppard's Arcadia and the power of the arts to help us see things differently, to the attention of our Education Secretary. Do read it, it will lift your spirits.

On school attendance. I’ve read lots on how Covid broke the social contract etc, but could part of the situation be that with parents working from home there’s less need to still send kids into school when under the weather?

In this podcast and recent blogs I’ve talked about how attention might be at the heart of issues that look on the surface to be about other things (e.g. working memory, comprehension, intelligence etc). Here’s a great recent example www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... 🧵1/2
