The Particle Accelerator Group at The University of Melbourne has had a busy couple of months, with members attending several conferences and workshops around Europe. Great work A/Prof Suzie Sheehy, Dr Jacinta Yap, Dr Adam Steinberg and PhD candidates Joel Bellesini, Simon Barg, and Joel Valerian!
We sincerely congratulate our longest-serving staff member, Alan Cooper, on his 80th birthday. Alan has been part of the HIA community for more than 50 years, joining the technical team at HIAF in 1974, providing invaluable support ever since. Wishing you many more wonderful years to come!
Our Victoria node joined the NCRIS20 celebrations hosted by AURIN at the University of Melbourne. It was a great gathering of people who tirelessly work behind the scenes to support the one of Australia’s greatest assets – the national research infrastructure. #NCRISImpact
NCRIS@20 celebrations took place across the nation this week We thank all our users, board members, staff, and collaborators who contributed to these important events. Together, we celebrated two decades of achievements while also reflecting on the future of Australia’s R&D sector. #NCRISImpact
This week our professional and technical staff attended the inaugural ACRI conference that brought together Australia's research infrastructure workforce. It was a golden opportunity to swap stories and experiences of working in research infrastructure and to form new connections and collaborations.
Recent visit from Integrated Service Technology (iST), Taiwan, and Foremay, US, focused on capabilities of our Space Irradiation Beamline at #HIAF. Now supported by iST, we can offer semiconductor failure analysis and decapping services to our clients requiring radiation testing.
Great week at Singapore for our space irradiation beamline team. At the Global Science and Technology Convention and Exhibition, they connected with existing partners and explored new opportunities in the semiconductor and space sectors. #gstce2026 #spaceradiationtesting #NSQN #NCRIS
The 9th Heavy Ion Accelerator Symposium (HIAS 2025) peer-reviewed conference proceedings are now available on EJP Web of Conferences. A huge effort by the editorial team to bring this together! The articles are available (open access) here: www.epj-conferences.org/articles/epj...

A big thank you to our ANU Open Day volunteers: Zuzana, Tom, Jack, and Misty. Armed with a classroom Van de Graaff, flying pie tins, and an Anna doll, they demonstrated the principles of static electricity that generate 15 million volts at HIAF and accelerate protons to plutonium. ⚡⚛️ #NCRIS
We are over the moon to work with the historic Roo-ver program. Funded by the Australian Space Agency and delivered by over 20 partners, it's the first lunar rover designed and built in Australia. Program Director Ben Sorensen toured our HIAF node to discuss space radiation testing. #NCRISimpact
Congratulations to the team Suzie Sheehy (lead investigator, University of Melbourne), Tessa Charles (ANSTO), and Prof Rob Appleby (The University of Manchester) on being awarded a highly competitive ARC DP to unlock the potential of next-generation magnets in particle accelerators. 🎉 #NCRISImpact
When radioactive atoms inside minerals decay, they fire out high energy particles that leave trails of destruction. To investigate this phenomenon, researchers created ion tracks in crystals by bombarding them with 185 MeV gold ions, using our Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility at the ANU💎👩🔬 #NCRISImpact
Radioactive decay leaves unusual trails of destruction in crystals, but now we understand them. Nice work Patrick Kluth using @ansto.bsky.social & @hia-accelerates.bsky.social will help with safer storage of radioactive waste. physics.anu.edu.au/news_events/... @aip.org.au @scienceanu.bsky.social
Congratulations to Tom Bonin for his new appointment as Accelerator Facilities Officer at our University of Melbourne node! 🎉 He will offer critical support for a number of high-profile projects including the pelletron accelerator. We’re happy to have you as part of our #HIA team!
