One line can bloodwake a bruised spirit –

starve winterdark with truth-tongued verse;

kindle a dawn of stanza-born light.

Sisyphus, Unfortunately

                        a piano uphill,             They push

                        Sisyphus with better hats.

            But the piano disagrees.

Left, they push.                         Right, it rolls.
                         A duet in gravity.
                                                 Laurel slips;                                                 Hardy follows—
                        entropy in bowlers.

            (a pause)

                        At the summit,                                     they breathe.

                        The piano rolls
                                    back down.

                        Again, says Laurel.

            Below, Sisyphus                         checks his watch,
                                    sees the piano coming –

                                                            and ducks.

Curtain at half-mast rehearsing the dark.

Sycamore key smudged against glass.

The last halo of evening is earlier now.

Already autopsied, the light obscures her face
 as if it knows where her sun will set.

my shadow drifts

inside my chest
a forest folds
furze-dark wings

in my ear
night turns waves
between stone

thermal roots
loosen grip
on the sky

the air bends
around a single
gull-feather

behind my eyes
the horizon opens
its zawn

between my ribs
a moth sleeps
in moorgloom

under my skin
the late tide
enters another adit

in my throat
granite crag hums
its buried nick

T H E D E E P E N I N G

The wheel turns slow, white horse, blue horse, wobbling towards Land’s End. You follow the yellow dog’s tracks into the earth, where old boundaries have gone to ground.

Kernow light glides back, Red Galver burns in the bones of hills, Chapel Carn Brea scraped by sun, Zennor cut by moon. At the ragged coast land and sea hold their silence.

And on the turning wheel, the deepening — earth, water, sky running together, colour left behind, a handprint in stone.
