🆕 Aggregating evidence, the research process, and empowering the public to understand research All that & more in this week's episode of Ideas in Development with @economeager.bsky.social. Really enjoyed discussing how we can improve the evidence base in economics by aggregating.

New working paper with Amol Singh Raswan and Chris Udry: "The Sisyphean Pursuit of Evidence for Poverty Traps." A central idea in development economics is that poverty can trap people. We went looking for the cleanest evidence. Here's what we found – and didn't.

So proud to celebrate my father, Josh Angrist, at his Festschrift -- a gathering of people and presentations in honor of his career and legacy. He has influenced so many: generations of Angrists and a rockstar student family tree. An impressive array of causal effects!

New working paper joint with Eliana La Ferrara and Cheaheon Lim on estimating norms complementarities with social spillovers. (Link: bpb-us-e1.wpmucdn.com/sites.harvar...)

With Jake Carlson (jscarlson.github.io) I have written "When are time series predictions causal? The potential system and dynamic causal effects." You can read it at shephard.scholars.harvard.edu/sites/g/file... Comments welcome. It is an epic read.

The conference was fantastic, highly recommend!

I would, I think, normally have dismissed or at least shrugged at the Governor’s invocation of MN as a special place with its own ethos and distinct moral identity. But I lived there. And it’s true.

I think this paper is pretty broadly applicable, not just in satellite data settings!

New paper on analytic filtering, prediction and smoothing for a class of exponential family models. Interested in comments. We continue to work on this abstract setup with more general weight functions and loss functions --- hope to report results soon. tinbergen.nl/discussion-p...
