Most HVAC installs are unplanned: Try to turn on the heat in fall or AC in spring, find it broken, call an HVAC shop, get it replaced with whatever they have on the shelf. A little forethought - and maybe teaming up with neighbors - can get you a (cleaner, better-performing) heat pump instead!
