I do love how much people read in NYC. I just got off a subway with the person across from me (Human Acts) to my left (The Coldest Winter Ever) and to my right (can't see the title) all immersed in books. (I was reading Three Tenses.)
the GOP is fully trumpified and the rising generation of staffers and wannabes are even worse. if you're between 25-35 and an aspiring right-wing politician you've spent most/all of your adult life in a political and social ecosystem the rewards this shit and weeds out people repulsed by it

violet allen@blipstress.bsky.social · 3d agoI think part of what makes me feel so insane about genre fans saying that litic is just about professors having affairs is that in there are so, so many examples in classic genre fiction of middle aged male leads sleeping with their assistants/alien princesses/elven maidens.
Pop country wokescolding aside, has there ever been a time where it's been easier to NOT hear billboard hits? No one listens to radio. Even cafes and stores stream Spotify playlists. Social media algorithms silo everyone. This is one good thing about the loss of monoculture.

I don't disagree with the thread below but frame it somewhat differently as an academic who regularly sees people who read for a living fail in the way described here. From that perspective it seems more a cultural crisis than an educational one
