ultimately it's shit like this that makes the decline of birth rates and resulting demographic skewing towards old people self-reinforcing. Greedy, wealthy retired people voting to destroy the funding for public services they relied on throughout their life now that they no longer need them

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Hamilton in Federalist No. 68, making the case for choosing a president via the electoral college: "It will not be too strong to say, that there will be a constant probability of seeing the station filled by characters pre-eminent for ability and virtue."

Trump on El-Sayed: "His name is actually Abduladadalalalala. It's Adulbabababababa Mohammed Al-Sayed. So his middle name is Mohammed. So I was right. He's a jihadist."

Street Fighter: I'm not mad that I saw it, but I mostly agree with Siddhant's review — once the tournament gets going, things get messy. My main question (non-plot division): Did they actually get Chris Berman to do the VO for the ESPN segment at the start, or was that a (very good) sound-alike?

‘Street Fighter’ Review: Video Game Fighter Film Knocks Itself Unconscious variety.com/2026/film/ne...

My wife & I were planning to see Street Fighter today, but between a combination of meh reviews for it and rapturous praise for You Can See Everything, I was gonna try to call an audible... but, bizarrely, the latter isn't playing at our local Regal??? (Astoria's is the closest one showing it.)

Great stuff from Matt! Pretty reassuring, although as he notes, nothing is certain. "Under new ownership and control, there are plenty of unknowns about how EA will want to develop future games. "But will those problems force [EA Sports College Football] to unplug? Not in the next few years."

I called around after the report earlier this week that the future of EA CFB could be in trouble. I'm told that EA is currently in the process of renewing their licensing agreement (which expires next year). Here's what else I found out: www.extrapointsmb.com/p/is-ea-coll...

It's not "strikingly juvenile" and it's not a "personal broadside." It's hate speech. The Vice President is trying to get people to vote against a Democrat by implying that he's gay and/or a pedophile and/or a fetishist. Take it seriously. It is on a par with every other kind of hate speech.

The Times using “critics say” in every other paragraph of this piece is cowardly. Like writing a weather story and using “observers say” to point out that it’s raining.” Journalism-lite. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/14/u...

Took the opportunity to check out 9 to 5 on the big screen today (with Disney donating net proceeds to Dolly Parton's Imagination Library!). It's a good thing I was alone in the theater, because I was basically hooting and hollering throughout... what a movie!

boy Trump fucked the American auto industry. first he yanks their EV subsidies, leading them to slash production and write off tens of billions in investment, then he jacks up the price of oil by 50%, leading to skyrocketing EV demand going almost entirely to China bc GM et al left the market

You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

This story makes it sound like the major problem is that the Trump Admin did this w/in 60 days of an election. Yes, that's a real abuse. But the major problem is they're basically threatening to denaturalize an opposition legislator, based on racist insinuations. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/12/u...

Federal Agents Search Home of Rep. Ilhan Omar (Gift Article)

The search takes place within the 60-day window of the midterm elections, when the Justice Department has historically avoided such investigative steps related to political candidates.

It’s cool, and not incredibly demoralizing, that the last ~25 years (? more?) have been an increasingly flagrant demonstration that The Rules, as we were brought up to understand them, just do not apply to a lot of people

this article contains literally the first instance I've ever seen of our newest military branch making itself useful: "After years of back and forth, the samples were delivered from Saint Helena to Florida by the U.S. Space Force."
