On this day in 1995, John Peters Humphrey died in Montreal. Born in 1905 in Hampton, New Brunswick, he was the author of the first draft of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a foundational document in human rights law adopted by the United Nations.

On this day in 1928, the Supreme Court heard the Persons Case. It later ruled that the phrase "qualified persons" in the British North America Act did not include women. The Famous Five then took their case to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, where they won.

On this day in 1878, the Windsor Hotel in Montreal opened in a gala attended by Sir John A. Macdonald. It was in this hotel that the NHL was formed in 1917. Today, all that remains of the hotel is the North Annex, which is now an office building known as Le Windsor.
