Excited to share our new paper that has just been published in GRL. We show that the “SWOT” satellite, designed for surface water and ocean topography studies, can also measure changes in the Antarctic ice shelves. Also grateful for my amazing co-authors that helped get this through to publication.

ESR celebrates the selection of EDGE, a swath-mapping laser altimetry NASA satellite which is slated for launch as early as 2030. EDGE is led by Helen Fricker at @scrippsocean.bsky.social, and ESR is a Project Partner contributing to algorithms and applications to ice sheets, sea ice, and oceans.

We had another great evening teaching kids about density and the oceans at Edmond Heights K-12 STEAM fair last night. For this event, ESR's @slhowardcryo.bsky.social and Jesse Anderson were joined by UMD glaciologist Taryn Black to present our hands-on exhibit.

ESR scientists were thrilled to spend Earth Day teaching students and parents about the importance of the oceans at the Sky Valley Education Center's Earth Day event on April 22. Susan Howard and Jesse Anderson explained the concept of density and discussed our work as physical oceanographers.

I'm a researcher funded by NSF. The indirect funds that are being slashed to 15% at NIH, and probably NSF soon, are not some kind of markup or profit. These pay for essential things like rent for a building to work in, lab space, salaries of people who manage benefits for the organization... 1/

A new iceberg, ~30x14 km in size, recently calved from the southern end of the George VI Ice Shelf. It's called A84 and is already making quite an impact, bumping into the Stange Ice Shelf over the weekend!
