"Men can generally be bad dept citizens as long as their research is valued, but women can’t." "Meritocracy is really just a way [to support] the status quo of a dominant white, male envrnmnt…I thought that if I worked hard enough, my work wld be recognized. But [that's] not how the system works."

This deep dive on XKCD's famous comic on all modern infrastructure manages to be important, fascinating and more than a little bit scary all at the same time. Worth a scroll. And massive kudos to Germany for their sovereign tech fund, all countries should have one sheets.works/data-viz/hol...

Ice-walled lake plains that look like badly made pancakes, some dissected by gullies, with other weird stagnant ice landforms around them. Taylor County, Wisconsin. I was on a field trip in northern MN where the leaders were talking about applying the Finnish word for pancakes to some of these.

Landscape with several large ice-walled lake plains, flat to gently sloping, often with raised rims, that stand at least a little above surrounding terrain. Formed where there was a lake in stagnant glacial ice. More ice-walled lake plains, these more mound-like with gully dissection. Other odd looking landforms are around them.

How could you not love geomorphology? 🏔️🧊🤍 Here's a perfect alpine glacier forefield, featuring: - the 1980s moraine (last glacier advance), - the 1920s/1890s doublet-that crosscuts-meaning fairly similar extents - the LIA maxima, with 1850 in violet. (length along flowline ~900 m) 📷 LiDAR HD IGN
