Interviewed yesterday on @bbc5live.bsky.social about glacier shrinkage in the Pamir mountains, central Asia. An area that, up to just a few years ago, had been characterised by relative glacier stability and even growth ❄️🤒 Even these last stalwarts now falling in line with global trend of shrinkage
📻🎙️I’ll be on BBC 5 Live just after 13:30 today talking to Naga Munchetty and Chris Smith about the recent reversal in fortunes of glaciers in the Pamir Mountains as reported in this recent paper: lnkd.in/evhZ3nvj and this New Scientist article: lnkd.in/e6Qk_kJH
This was delayed and will now happen Tuesday 9th June sometime after 13:30

After two field expeditions and one year in the making, very pleased to share my second paper from my PhD is now published! ⛰️ We obtained the first dataset of ice-contact lake physical conditions in the Himalaya throughout the critical monsoon and glacier melt season ⬇️ doi.org/10.1029/2024...
Monsoon and Glacial Meltwater Input Drive Seasonal Cooling of a Himalayan Ice‐Contact Lake
Lake surface temperatures exceeded 9°C at the surface, and were consistently warmer close to the glacier front, driven by convection Monsoon-specific meteorological conditions and input of glacia...

🏔️❄️New book chapter on GLACIAL HAZARDS now published in ‘Comprehensive Cryospheric Science and Environmental Change’. Covers paraglacial landslides, permafrost degradation, ice &snow avalanches, glacier detachments, GLOFs, ice-volcano interactions Full: lnkd.in/eGtqQf8H Pre-print: lnkd.in/ek59Swfu
Lots of dune erosion and slumping at Lunan Bay, east Scotland, after what can be described as ‘pants’ weather recently. 6 y.o. for scale. #coast #landslide #beach #dune
Trump should return to his Scottish roots and take my Polar Environments course @dundeeuni.bsky.social 🐧 The penguin is even our university mascot…because of Dundee’s links to ANTARCTICA
There are many serious governments in the world. The US is not one of them. (There are no penguins in Greenland.)

High frequency of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) driven by global warming Overall, the long-term trajectory of reported GLOF frequency closely parallels variations in global air temperature, exhibiting a lag-correlated pattern on timescales of ~20 years. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
High frequency of moraine-dammed lake outburst floods driven by global warming - Nature Communications
The study presents an updated global inventory of glacial lake outburst floods, revealing a sharp rise in event frequency since the 1980s and a strong delayed link to climate warming, highlighting gro...

🏔️NEW in @natcomms.nature.com: “High frequency of moraine-dammed lake outburst floods driven by global warming” www.nature.com/articles/s41... 🤔There’s been lots of uncertainty about whether the number of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) has increased, decreased or flatlined in recent decades

These low-angle glacier detachments are, mercifully, rare, but can be incredibly destructive. Good review here, though several events since it was published in 2021: tc.copernicus.org/articles/15/...
Sudden large-volume detachments of low-angle mountain glaciers – more frequent than thought?
Abstract. The detachment of large parts of low-angle mountain glaciers resulting in massive ice–rock avalanches have so far been believed to be a unique type of event, made known to the global scienti...

Random thought. Thailand could pass for a glacier. Nice wide accumulation zone (though struggling in the mid section)
Storm Amy has been record breaking ⚠️ An air pressure of 947.9 hPa was recorded at Baltasound, Shetland, provisionally setting a new UK lowest pressure record for October. Northern Ireland provisionally recorded its strongest October wind gust on record, with a gust of 92 mph at Magilligan.

Left high and dry, this former glacial meltwater channel was carved into the Sidlaw Hills just north of Dundee by the last ice sheet to occupy this region ~20,000 years ago. It’s one of several that i’ve been mapping with students & colleagues over the last couple of years.
Met Office stats confirm summer 2025 is officially the warmest summer on record for the UK. The UK’s mean temp of 16.10°C surpasses the previous record of 15.76°C and pushes the summer of 1976 out of the top 5 warmest summers. www.metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/new...
