Stay Quiet

He’s so sick
of the TV’s endless bellow,
the stench of faeces and mashed potatoes,

but Grandad never complains
even as his surgery gets postponed over and over,
bruises on his arms like berry compote.

He knows not to stir, that one patient
was murdered by another
for weeping all night.

My first Luas trip, a man, high
or drunk, groped my grandfather’s skull,
giggled at his grey curls, twirled them around

his knuckles before smoothing
them flat as a field of maize.
Grandad sat as if at a barbers and waited

for the guy with a knife poking
from his pocket to stagger away.
All he had lost by then —

his wife, seven border collies.
I was shaking, nine years old, without a ticket.
‘We’re invisible,’ Grandad whispered.

Eight years without meat. Which is not to say this body has gone eight years without death inside of it.
I have swallowed rot as rank as riverbeds, gnawed mold-pitted pride until it reached its dim-lit dwelling
of near-womb. I cursed the fertileness of healthy harvests, and once, in a dream, ate an entire human baby,
prompted by speculation that I was supposed to be born a twin. Believe me when I say I truly believed
my parents were hiding one half of me. Some hospital mishap, an uncoupled pairing. What other reason could there be
to feel so deeply this sense of loss, a relentless pull toward negative space? For a long time
I misinterpreted each form of absence as hunger. And yet there were three meals a day, fresh fruit. I sat my shadow-
self down for dinner, sang grace to god for his love of slaughtered hare. I slipped gravestones to my lips,

digested new timelines. In one, I plucked cockatoo feathers with my canine teeth. In another, man-toothed men
took to my skin with butter and herbs. I came out of the oven warm and watchful. My shadow disappeared
It was noon or night and this carelessness caused a scene.
But soon the sun shifted and there were shadows again.
I licked their dark lengths to taste once more the sacrament of shame. Eight years
and I can still feel a coppery coating in my mouth, the rawhide undertones of a longing to be devoured.
I'm thirty-six now, my body at its heaviest. Somehow I thought this weight would bring me wisdom
but different cuts of sunlight can still stretch my twinself wishbone thin. Outside the window, my ghost
is across the pasture. Soon it will walk its way back to me. I will be full again, but not fully.
