Talarico: "We just found out that [Elon Musk] is almost single-handedly bankrolling this effort to install Ken Paxton in the U.S. Senate and defeat this movement...Elon Musk wants our land. He wants our water. He wants his very own personal United States senator. He is trying to buy Texas."

Just back from Japan. What a trip. One of the highlights was meeting Tomoko Ohta. She is one of the most important figures in the history of the life sciences, but few outside of the field of molecular evolution know of her or her work.

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting to the Center for Strategic and International Studies on Everything being Connected: “The cost of defending peace today can be far smaller than the price of restoring it tomorrow.

“Musk then prevented any community notes from appearing on Sortor’s post for many hours, ensuring that no one could debunk the bogus claim before it reached tens of millions of people, and suspended accounts that dug into its veracity” @lebassett.bsky.social www.laura-bassett.com/p/anatomy-of...

Anatomy of a fake scandal

WSJ obtained video of Ken Paxton partying with literal fugitives in Dubai, so Republicans panicked and invented a story about Talarico checking into a psych hospital. It backfired.

Concluding the meeting with the American delegation in the US two days ago, after receiving a tirade of threats from Trump officials, Ukraine's Budanov turned when leaving and said, "We are now going to burn every last Russian refinery and every last port to hell. All of it, down to the final one."

When Congress appropriated this money, it was intended to fund a wide range of research and projects. The Trump Administration cannot simply ignore Congress and withhold or redirect funds it doesn’t want to spend. It's illegal.

Agency Diverted $1.4 Billion in Science Funds Mandated by Congress

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

Congratulations to our first Nobel Prize laureate of 2026 🎉 Early this morning Karl Deisseroth found out he was awarded this year's Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. He seems very happy with the news!

Made the poor decision to watch "The Love Hypothesis" this weekend and if you have any experience in academic science environments I strongly urge you not to. If the author, as claimed, indeed has a PhD in neuroscience from an accredited university I can only conclude that they wrote it as rage bait

The most worrisome issue here is that this effort in NIH predates the Trump administration (and they have found ready allies in Trump staffers) and there is a contingent of biomedical engineers that have oversold their capacity to model physiological organ function.

Can confirm (see 🧵 ). But let me share some optimism. A NIH colleague said today that against all odds, NIH has been…winning. “We made this EO a necessity. We fought hard. We threw sand in all the gears. All the lowdown ways of blocking grants failed to produce the results Vought et al wanted.”

What. A. Day. NIH grant-making was paused for several hours today. Not sure who gave the order. But in light of the Friday night Bhattacharya-Vought feud & threatened EO to implement #ScienceDeathPanels, my money is on Russell Vought. I learned of the pause from a colleague around 11:30. 🧵
