Satoru has been doing good with the new system. Small tasks. All numbered on a list written in the notepad he denies is his personal journal— or as close as he'd ever get to one— that he likes to cross check like diligent scouts move their names across tasks on kaper charts.
That's how Suguru, stuck in workflow for the first time in days, doesn't realize until much later that the house is too quiet, too silent, void of shuffling footsteps or low humming or the click of claws following a pair of slippers wherever they go.
He finds Satoru sitting on the edge of his bed with Shiro's head propped in his thigh. Black eyes look up sadly at blue ones that shine red and puffy once they focus on him.
I forgot my next step, he mumbles, broken, and Suguru's heart breaks with his voice. Can't even tell which number it was.
Stepping into the room, Suguru kneels to catch him as he folds forward, like a puppet with its strings cut. Hot tears stain his sweatshirt. He doesn't mind. He's used to doing laundry on the daily now.

Shhh, it's fine, he whispers in a soothing voice. We have a list. We can always check what's crossed.
What if one day I lose something important? What if I just wake up and forget it all? comes the confession, raw, ripped from Satoru’s throat.
Suguru closes his eyes against the onslaught, a gash still cracks his heart in two, turning white before aching, spilling red across the carpet where he kneels. He takes a deep breath before replying. You won't, baby. This is making you tired and confused, but doesn't affect your memory long term. He rubs Satoru's earlobe, in lack of hair to play with. Heat and sweat transfer to his fingertips. Now they both need a shower and a clothes change. Our memories will be with you, always, and if not, I'll be right here to remind you, okay?
Sobbing, Satoru clutches tighter against him.
Suguru stays rooted in place, ignoring the pain in his knees and the overflow of sadness pooling around his feet, and steels his arms so they don't falter in helping Satoru carry the weight.

After ice cream and cuddling? Satoru asks, voice as small as his body looks on top of scratchy sheets hooked on several tubes.
Suguru nods. After ice cream and cuddling, he smiles.
Satoru lifts his left hand.
Chuckling, Suguru interlocks their pinkies, and leans over to kiss his own thumb without breaking eye contact.

The amount of working artists I've spoken to who are losing or have lost the ability to make a viable career out of it due largely to people's use of genAI instead of hiring artists is genuinely so upsetting. We won't know what we've lost until it's gone.
