"As for the letter’s insistence that admissions be 'based on merit'? 'They mean they think too many Black people have gotten into places they never should have gotten into,' she said." I have gotta learn to be more straightforward www.chronicle.com/article/for-...

For Higher Ed, Trump’s Compact 2.0 Is Either an Olive Branch or a Gloved Fist

The White House has promised there will be no direct penalties — or rewards — for making the statements asked for, but some are skeptical.

Another day, another Chronicle essay about the dangers of "activist" scholarship. Today's contribution to the genre comes from an Ivy League social psychologist who is so worried about anthropologists' motivated reasoning that he has nothing to say about Jonathan Haidt.

“Genuine intellectual diversity requires time for reflection, institutional independence, historical depth, ethical questioning, & the freedom to pursue research unconstrained by immediate market demands. These conditions cannot flourish where knowledge itself has become increasingly commodified.”

Higher Ed Can’t Be Neutral in an Age of Brutality. It Must Choose Democracy.

Contemporary proponents of “institutional neutrality” fail to grasp that universities have never been outside politics.

"When universities retreat into managerial caution as democratic institutions are dismantled, they teach students that conformity is safer than dissent, that moral responsibility yields to bureaucratic calculation, and that the defense of democracy lies outside the university’s mission."

"Yet contemporary appeals to neutrality...identify as political only those form of knowledge that challenge existing relations of domination while treating market values, corporate influence, billionaire philanthropy, militarized research, nationalism, & racial hierarchy as ideologically innocent."

"Such appeals to neutrality present themselves as safeguards for open inquiry, but they often function as ideological cover for institutional silence in the face of assaults on democracy, academic freedom, and human rights."

"Democratic institutions cannot survive once citizens lose the historical consciousness, ethical imagination & critical capacities necessary to challenge organized lies & manufactured ignorance. The struggle over ed is therefore never secondary to politics. It is one of politics’ decisive terrains."

We rolled deep at the @aft.org convention this year. We got our resolution on pre-contract unionism passed unanimously. We built relationships with our amazing union siblings. And now we more ready than ever to go back to our campuses and communities and build power through organizing! 🧵

"Pre-contract unionism" is another way to describe what all workplace organizing looked like before many workers fought for and won collective bargaining rights. That fight continues today with our recent AFT convention resolution to support pre-contract unionism in higher ed. @aaup.org @aft.org

The White House didn’t weigh scientific merit or alleged noncompliance of grant terms when they cut billions in life-saving research, they just looked for words they didn’t like. Blue states were specifically targeted for defunding.

A reminder that UC _faculty_ and Faculty Associations — not the universities themselves nor their administrators — are waging this battle in court, demonstrating great bravery and moral clarity.

OUT TODAY, the AAUP just released the first comprehensive account of how the Trump administration has taken the same playbook it's used on law firms & foreign governments & turned it on American universities. US higher ed has, in effect, become a target of a massive extortion racket. 🧵
