part of why this will be hard to internalize is because it sucks. yes, there was always a good amount of fiction and hypocrisy behind the idea that politics was something other than what ive described but hypocrisy is the tribute vice pays to virtue. deciding how to govern > deciding who should rule
Stolen valor. The American Legion, VFW, DAV, IAVA, etc., shouldn't tolerate it and they should demand its removal.

there is a strain of lefty discourse where you can’t come to any unflattering conclusions about the populace—those must be explained away by how they are being acted upon by capital—but I think you’ll understand things better if you understand capital can also exploit weaknesses it didn’t create

He spent more than half his life in the US, he’s been here for 2 decades, he was as American as anyone. The nation’s first naturalization act in 1790 made you a citizen after 2 years of residency—but then that was only for free white persons.

Personally I would love to see Bluesky expand. It shouldn’t just be the app for leftists who can’t stand Matt Yglesias! It should also be the app for liberals who can’t stand Matt Yglesias. And apolitical folks who can’t stand Yglesias. And, yes, even conservatives who can’t stand Matt Yglesias!
HB 958 makes it harder for people to vote and easier for partisans to throw out votes after the election is over when they don’t like the results. This bill undermines our elections and weakens our democracy. I urge all North Carolinians to demand their legislators to vote against it.
Appropriate air quotes because the most infuriating part about Americans debating "lockdown" is that it simply never happened. Having to pick up your Applebees and eat it on the sectional does not count. There wasn't even a brief moment where "everything" was closed. That's not real.

it's so beyond normal words to describe. If you try to explain exactly, literally what is happening right now in front of our eyes many people think you're insane. In their minds, if it was "really that bad, someone would stop it" and "They wouldnt be so obvious if it was actually happening"
I worry that most cynical among us, hopped up on 30 years of law and order rhetoric, will say "this is the system working: he didn't do anything wrong and now he's free." As if the terror and wide-scale publicity of an arrest and federal prosecution is not a horrible punishment in and of itself.

whenever someone tells you that it's simply impossible for police to be charged with misconduct or criminal charges, you can tell they're wrong because some cops do get charged regularly — when they are whistleblowers or reformers prosecutors are actually extremely eager to help drum them out!
