We rarely egt daylight NFG moths here but Lynnette found our first-ever Fig-leaf Skeletoniser on the echinops just now. We'd walked past a fig tree in Salthouse yesterday and said "wonder if we'll ever get one of these in the garden". Hey presto! @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths

...as well as the QoSFs, we found a few moths amongst the fleabane & brassicas. Along with Sitochroa verticalis & a lovely Marbled Clover, the highlights were at least two Vestals that would often settle low down & right in front of us for a while. @linnetincley.bsky.social @suffolkmoths.bsky.social
Our afternoon was focused on walking tracks thru' a big set-aside field at Kesgrave for the Queen of Spain Fritillaries reported recently. We had 5 brief sightings on a blustery, often cloudy afternoon across 2 hours. Then, boom! A feeding QOSF! Sweet! @linnetincley.bsky.social #suffolkbutterflies
Had to head across our county lines again today (collecting a few new bits & bobs) ~ but 1st stop was a superb Antlion, courtesy of Dave Fairhurst. Only seen one adult before, decades ago at Dunwich, so this one was a very welcome refresher. Absolute knockout! @linnetincley.bsky.social #suffolkbugs
Better views of the unseasonal Jack Snipe off East Bank late afternoon, often showing well & fully in the open, sometimes with a Common Snipe too. @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleybirds #norfolkbirding
There's a lot of Common Snipe around the marsh at the moment & they are all just as smart as each other. Feather perfect 👌 @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleybirds #norfolkbirding
It's not always moths that catch the morning eye ~ this superb Lesser Stag Beetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus) was in the actinic today, perhaps it was the same own that we saw yesterday (but didn't get too many shots of). Absolute unit & v. smart too. @linnetincley.bsky.social @norfolknats.bsky.social
Frosted Orange! The first of the proper autumn moths dropped in last night ~ our earliest ever and, for a moth that we often see when it's cool & crisp, it seems weird to see one when the temperature barely dropped below 20 degrees. @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth
Double helping of Rhubarb & Custard at CMO today. Rosy Knot-horn (Oncocera semirubella) is always a favourite here and we keep on getting them this summer. And we're very happy about that! @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth 1 /2
Rhubarb & Custard Cley Moth Obs July 28 2026 @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth 2/2
The Mohawk Moth came to visit today ~ our annual Bird's Wing showed up and was a dark mantled cracker. We average one a year and here is the 2026 model. Part goth-moth, part punk-moth. The Sisters of Pistols should you wish... @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth
Two new moth trap intruders this morning. Lesser Stag Beetle (Dorcus parallelipipedus) and Forget-me-not Shield Bug (Sehirus luctuosus). @markgolley.bsky.social @norfolknats.bsky.social #TeamMoth
Three more from earlier to wrap up another busy moth morning at CMO. Another (more obliging) Saltmarsh Plume, a new generation Yellow-barred Brindle & our first Lesser Swallow Prominent of 2026. Lovely stuff. @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth
Crème caramel or Crème brûlée? The stunning Evergestis extimalis (the Marbled Yellow Pearl) somehow puts me in mind of both of those delicious old skool French sweet treats 😉 Whichever dessert takes your fancy this is the moth for you! @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth
Antler Moth Cley Moth Obs July 28 2026 @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth 2/2
Our first Antler Moth since autumn 2022 was the pick of nearly 100 species today at CMO HQ. A lovely surprise this morning & a very attractive moth. @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth 1/2
A Cley July Jack Snipe wasn't really on the bingo card but this one showed on the mud of the Serpentine tonight ~ it's been limping & hopping around most of the month apparently. An extraordinary summer record, perhaps the injury held it back? @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleybirds #norfolkbirding
Super 90 minutes along East Bank & Arnold's tonight ~ Jack Snipe (hobbling around since earlier this month apparently), 2 Caspian Gulls, 45+ Med Gulls ~ steady stream of juvs W ~ 2 Whimbrel thru', 3 Red Knot, single limosa & 100s of terns. Nice! @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleybirds #norfolkbirding
There's a lot of Coleophoras out there & some are fiendishly difficult to ID. Others that are pleasingly straightforward ~ step forward Coleophora albitarsella (White-legged Case-bearer). A funky micro this, smart jet-black garb & white leg combo. @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths
Our first Saltmarsh Plume of the year was late to the photo pass this evening & it didn't really behave as I was hoping at first. However, it did stop for a moth-y arthouse image with moon & St Margaret's in the background. I quite like this one! @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths

The weather has warmed up & despite a sizeable moon, we're back into century territory today with well over 100 species recorded. These two were my morning favourites ~ Black Arches ~ a huge female & a feathery, smaller male. Gorgeous! @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth
Tawny-barred Angle was another super-smart moth from the morning tally. This isn't an overly common moth here (just our 10th ever) but it is annual. This may well be the freshest we've had to date. @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth
Can't ever resist having these two side-by-side ~ it doesn't happen here very often so the inevitable double heffalump shot was a gimme... Small Elephant & Elephant Hawk-moths at CMO HQ today. @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth
Here's our first Shaded Tortrix (Eucosma obumbratana) of 2026. Quite simply the best scientific name of the day...I love saying it and yes, I'm absolutely old enough to know better 😂! @linnetincley.bsky.social #cleymothobs #norfolkmoths #teammoth
We've spent time at Stone Pit Heath this week, hoping for a PE encounter but it's harder than you think. We had several Silver-washed Fritillaries today + Purple Hairstreaks as well as Brimstone, Ringlet & plenty of Gatekeepers & Meadow Browns. @linnetincley.bsky.social @norfolknats.bsky.social
🎶"My my my" said the spider to the dragonfly...🎶 Up close with the Orb-Weaver species (maybe Furrow?) and what I think was a Common Darter in the ditches along the Iron Road this afternoon. Fascinating to see this predatory behaviour up close. @linnetincley.bsky.social @norfolknats.bsky.social
