www.plantingscience.org A student-teacher-scientist partnership promoting plant-focused learning in 6-12+ grade classrooms

The Fall 2026 session has really begun here! Our first few groups are starting their classwide explorations this week, and about six groups are actively seeking mentors and hope to start by the end of September! This session, we have a nice diversity of topics under exploration, too!

You can see us in this video! :). (Blink and you'll miss it, but Jen is wearing her favorite PlantingScience shirt when the BSA staff shouts, 'Plant People!') (Maybe we need a verse about teachers and scientists working together to help students better understand plants? Hmmm...)

🌿 Midday joy break! "Plant People for the Win" is a brand-new music video celebrating plant people everywhere, made just for us by Doc Martine and the Botaneers. Turn it up and yell PLANT PEOPLE! 🌱 Watch here: youtu.be/wlyVPuerA0U #DayforBSA #PlantPeopleFTW #IamaBotanist

Thumbnail for the music video "Plant People for the Win" by Doc Martine and the Botaneers. Large hand-lettered white text over a lush green forest reads "PLANT PEOPLE FOR THE WIN," with a comic-style burst reading "PLANT PEOPLE!" and a red YouTube play button. Below the title: "By Doc Martine and the Botaneers." The lower half is a grid of joyful photos of botanists of all ages out in the field, smiling, holding plants, and working together in forests and greenhouses around the world.

The BSA is what makes our work possible, and our outreach to secondary education and undergraduate nonmajors is not their only effort to promote botanical science education! Check out their page on this Day for BSA and consider supporting the good work we do!

Being the only botanist in your department can feel lonely. For Hilary Callahan, BSA turns that isolation into community and solidarity. 🌱 YOUR Journey toward community is OUR Story in action. Give to the Endowment this #DayforBSA: day-for-bsa.botany.org/2026 #IamaBotanist

A Day for BSA quote graphic. White text quotes Hilary Callahan, who describes being the only botanist in her academic department and finding comforting solidarity by engaging with BSA, which keeps botany a priority week after week, year after year. Below is a photo of Hilary smiling in glasses, a blue knit cap, and a colorful scarf, beside the circular A Day for BSA logo. Bottom text: “YOUR Journey — OUR Story. Give to the BSA Endowment Today!”

Aww, we appreciate you, too! Thank you for the shout-out on #IPAD2026! We love what we do. When students get into a good conversation with a botanist, the results are magical to watch! We are proud to be 'growing the field'. 🌾🌱🌿 🔬

It's International Plant Appreciation Day and BSA President Ken Cameron has a message to send! #IPAD2026 #Botany #IamaBotanist www.youtube.com/shorts/lTWrn...

Obviously, we agree! Sometimes it seems that academia disregards the impact simple interaction can have on students at the 6th-12th grade levels. However, these are the ages when we can really build the curiosity and interest that founds future adults' science and botanical literacy.

What can we do as scientists? One thing: mentor the habits of seeing and thinking scientifically, and cultivate interest in the world. From @botsocamerica.bsky.social Plant Science Bulletin, a clip of high-school students' responses to @plantingscience.bsky.social mentorship:

Know a Stranger Things fan who also loves plants? We got you! Check out the BSA's newest drop! Proceeds support the BSA (and, by extension, us!). Make sure you check out the back, too!

Throwing some love to our friends at Skype-a-Scientist today! If you're looking for an opportunity to engage with the next generation of (possible) scientists but don't feel like you can commit to a PlantingScience student team, here's another option. (Note: you can easily do both, too!)
